    Thanks Mike

The tin foil hat in me says the game has been a foot for some time - is this forward planning or what? crafty buggers

Mr Stephens said China had put global competitors out of business in the early 1990s by flooding the market, leading to the closure of the biggest US rare earth mine at Mountain Pass in California - now being revived by Molycorp Minerals.

This will be rather convenient for them, but may not have as big an impact as you might think. A good chunk of the products that require these metals are already made in China anyhow; this will just mean a bit less competition for their manufactured goods.

In any case, there are rare earth deposits elsewhere; it's just that the mines have been idle for a while. No doubt that will change.
