McCain: ‘I Always Aspire To Be A Dictator’»

Discussing the Wall Street bailout yesterday during an interview with the Des Moines Register editorial board, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said the failure of Congress to act is “just not acceptable.” Then — presumably making an attempt at humor — McCain added that, if only he were a dictator, then the bill would be just right:

MCCAIN: I just want to make a comment about the obvious issue and that is the failure of Congress to act yesterday. Its just not acceptable. […] This is just a not acceptable situation. I’m not saying this is the perfect answer. If I were dictator, which I always aspire to be, I would write it a little bit differently.

Oops! Another McCain public image "brainfart" on the campaign trail! When he was just a maverick senator I used to sort of like this guy. Just don't really want him for Prez this time around (his running mate pick was the clincher). And that does not make me wild about Obama, only maybe slightly less "hazardous".

I agree completely with your comment. Back in 2000 I donated big to McCain because I had lived in Texas when little Bush ran for governor and couldn't stand him. Suprise, Bush wins after the South Carolina 'swift boating' of McCain. Now McCain really has become George Bush Junior and he clinched it when he picked Palin. One question I still wonder about: Could it be that Palin was chosen for McCain by the puppet masters? Either way, McCain/Palin would be a disaster in the White House.

As for Obama, during the primaries I donated to him to try to insure against the Clintons regaining control of the presidency. I can now candidly admit that I have come to really support Obama. I really do believe that Obama is the best candidate for president among all contenders this year. I'll do everything I can to help him win my state of Washington.

I just can't see this duo lasting very long in the Politics of Distraction. Obama is so much stronger a choice. He's got race, novelty... to the uninformed, maybe even a plan.

I'm half waiting for a Muskie Moment in the McCain campaign to clinch it. Dirty Tricks, anyone....

Does somebody know who got more money from Wall Street?

You need to utilize the available resources! The Center for Responsive Politics, OpenSecrets.org.

I was there yesterday, but it didn't answer my question to my satisfaction.

I hear stuff like, Obama is the Wall Street candidate and numbers like he got 4 times the money McCain got from Wall Street. It wouldn't surprise me , but it's not that easy to get numbers

Obama's list gives the appearance that he has not leaned so heavily on bundlers working on Wall Street, although since his campaign has ignored repeated requests from the Center for Responsive Politics and other watchdog groups to disclose his bundlers' employers and occupations, these figures are probably undercounts. The securities and investment industry is Obama's second-largest source of bundlers, after lawyers, and at least 56 individuals have raised at least $8.9 million for his campaign. Bundlers in the larger finance, insurance and real estate sector have collected at least $13.4 million for Obama, making it his most generous sector.

The only system that is more broke than the financial system is the campaign system. I don't think you can judge what they will do in office by where their money is coming from, unless there is a really outrageous amount coming from one special interest group. Nobody can get this far without taking a huge amount of money from anyone who will give it. And those who are giving often times are simply betting on who they think will win so maybe they can have some influence.

I think your better off looking at the 527 ads and tracking down where that money is coming from. These people aren't necessarily trying to buy influence, they're buying a political philosophy. By determining the philosophy of the 501's you might be able to get a better feel on how the candidate will govern if elected.

By the way, on an interview with NPR yesterday, McCain said he often seeks advice from Palin.

Do you mean the 527's? Opensecrets, for example, is a 501.

                      http://www.opensecrets.org/527s/

The Dem leaning 527's have always received the largest (by far) donations from individuals while the GOP leaning 527's receive more, smaller donations - this goes back to the old-time PAC funding too.

I can also say that going back to the start of this campaign - Romney was the guy that the 527's backed heavily, much more so than McInsane, while Obama and Clinton receieved equal backing.
