    Does time exist in a casino?

      That was so frustrating. It was so hard to hear what was being said. Thank you for sharing. The casino line was great.

                In light of the fact that the fiscal cliff talks seem to have collapsed. Do you now think that a crisis will arise in January?

                  time is yet not ripe.
                  recall Bush tax cuts were slated to expire 2 yrs ago and 2 yrs ago the gove past a 2-yr extension (post 2012 election)
                  recall debt ceiling debacle when they composmised 18 months ago to keep going on runaway spending until Jan 13 when cuts would be forced (again post 2012 election).
                  this whole fiscal cliff meme is just propganda to scare the public into letting the gov do what it pleases -


                  Nothnig will occur other then some nominal tax increase and 10 yr reduction in spending and whether they get to it in Jan or Mar, everything will be retroactive ... and with a promise to reduce the growth in spending by $1.2trillion over the next 10 year (read: not much), the rating agencies will be allowed to keep their AA++ rating of the US and this thing will just keep going.

                  This whole thing is ridiculuous. Nothing on the Fed front will change ... until is does.

                    Could be right. Bruce Krasting thinks that most commentators are missing the point. The Alternative Minimum Tax will be retroactively applied to a large percentage (~20%) of the population come Jan 15. This will lead to a large drop in GDP. Congress does have a few days to fix this issue, but people will have their checks in the mail next week.

                    Gordon Long has speculated out loud that the reason for QE4 was that Obama knew that the fiscal cliff negotiations would not work.

                      there might be a few sophisticated taxpayers who make estimated payments on the amt next week, but i think the bulk of it wouldn't hit til april. the so-called "cliff" is really a slope, as the 2% fica holiday ends and higher rates, and the higher withholding that goes with it, kicks in paycheck by paycheck. i'll be curious to see if there are massive layoffs by the federal gov't. this would make good theater for the obama adminstration, so i see it as a distinct possibility. the economy itself will be hit only gradually, the financial markets might be another matter.

                        read this in the paper yesterday, witholding rates are on hold until the 2nd week of Jan?? Fica is immediate. I suspect no deal until Mid January.
                        Im considering selling stocks on dec 31 and buying them right back to get 15% cap gains rate, and raising my basis. I don't think 15% will survive even if a deal is struck. there is no wash sale on a gain.
