  • Cory Doctorow: The coming war on general computation [& human rights]

A brilliant and thought provoking talk on the complex challenges of digital copyright and how the stakes are quickly rising from merely limiting the ability to copy programs & media to actually passing laws that restrict the freedom, privacy and general rights of the populations of entire nations.

Starts off with a brief history of failed enforcements to copy software but then also peeks into a rather concerning potential future. Discusses the philosophical reasons why attempts to impose copyright laws like PIPA, SOPA, ACTA fail to get passed time and time and time again, but despite failure to pass such laws, why each new law proposed is even more concerning and infringing than the previous one!
1 hour of your weekend well spent.

    Warning: Network Engineer talking economics!

It is interesting that Doctorow warns against the impending threat to ban general purpose computers, when the largest category of computing growth is exactly a type of computer which has been restricted from general purpose: Apple.

Apple censors all software that goes on their mobile platforms, and furthermore deliberately makes it difficult to do even minor operations.
