  • Republic, Lost

In an era when special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our government—driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission—trust in our government has reached an all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control over our legislature.

With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic—and instead using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the Left—Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take such a foothold in our system. He puts the issues in terms that nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for regaining control of our corrupted—but redeemable—representational system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our republic to its intended greatness.

While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and that we must find a way to fight against it. In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear—he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

thanks fred - while there are certainly risks, methinks a Constitutional Convention = Urgently Required, as its plainly obvious at this point that congress has been corrupted, co-opted, hamstrung, broken and bankrupt of any ideas for a way forward and out of the swamp that they have driven The Rest of US into.

We The People Taking Back Control of OUR Government = The Only Answer and the 'normal' elective process aint gonna git it.

and WE dont have the time to waste any more while they merely fight over the 're-arrangement of the deck chairs' as the SS United States of America sinks...

Strange how the nicely turned out video makes no mention of Get Money Out.

Lessig's draft of the proposed Constitutional Amendment:

"No non-citizen shall contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office. United States citizens shall be free to contribute no more than the equivalent of $100 to any federal candidate during any election cycle. Notwithstanding the limits construed to be part of the First Amendment, Congress shall have the power to limit, but not ban, independent political expenditures, so long as such limits are content and viewpoint neutral. Congress shall set forth a federal holiday for the purposes of voting for candidates for Federal office."

Lessig's draft of the proposed Constitutional Amendment:

He was on Dylan's show the other day, not sure why the video doesn't mention it.

Another group moving to end corporate personhood, to amend the constitution.

Hopefully the many groups that are coming to the same conclusion, can start working together, join forces to get this issue on the ballot for 2012.

          Article 5 - Amendment

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.
Good luck with passing an Amendment. The politicians who have been bought by the Oligarchy will never let this happen.

If you REALLY care about removing some of the systemic corruption that has been built into our laws over the past several decades, you'll look to the Supreme Court. There has been a consistent 5-4 vote on almost all decisions that have empowered the Oligarchs, including one of the most undemocratic decisions ever handed down by a Supreme Court, citizens united.

If you are serious, you'll take a look at these 5 justices, and the previous justices that voted to support the Oligarchy and how they got there, and who appointed them. The best chance of reversing the damage they have done is to have future Supreme courts overturn these horrendous decisions. When you vote next year, you're not only voting for President and Senators, you're voting for future Supreme Court justices who have the power to undercut democracy for the vast majority, to support an Oligarchy for the minuscule minority.

I disagree with this. FDR packed the Supreme Court in order to get many of his programs through numerous SCOTUS challenges, but that didn't matter in the long run.

The SCOTUS cannot rule on anything which isn't first brought before it; while certainly there are issues there, the real issues are in the rest of the system.

Trying to fix the SCOTUS is not any type of magic wand.

For that matter, there is increasing amounts of money going into judge elections all over the country. You can see in this report: http://newpoliticsreport.org/site/wp...ine-Imaged.pdf

From my viewpoint, it is time to get all money out of politics.

Lessig's view is intended to be a bridge when in fact it needs to be a separation.

Inspiring example of very effective non-violent protest:

"He has a right to speak" said the cop to the banker.
