LOS ANGELES | Sun Oct 2, 2011 12:04pm EDT
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Family film "Dolphin Tale" jumped to the top of the movie box office over the weekend, unseating "The Lion King" and beating four newcomers, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
"Dolphin Tale," which had finished third when it debuted a week earlier, took in $14.2 million over three days at U.S. and Canadian theaters. The movie is based on the true story of a dolphin that gets snared by a crab trap and is rehabilitated with a prosthetic tail.
Baseball drama "Moneyball," starring Brad Pitt, finished second with $12.5 million. The 3D makeover of animated classic "The Lion King," box-office champ for the two previous weekends, fell to third with $11.1 million.
"Dolphin Tale" was released by Warner Bros, a unit of Time Warner Inc. Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp, released "Moneyball," and Walt Disney Co distributed "The Lion King 3D."

Re: Karen Janszen - Dolphin Tale
Friends of ours took their 6 and 9 year old boys to Dolphin Tale this past weekend - their entire family loved it. The 6 year old told his Mom that the Story brought tears to his eyes - he enjoyed the movie so much.

Re: Karen Janszen - Dolphin Tale
A few days prior to Fred posting this thread, my wife had mentioned that our 8 year old son had been asking if we would take him to see it ever since he saw the trailer. We went Friday before last and we all enjoyed it. Definitely was an emotional roller coaster ride for the boy in terms of the journey-as-a-means-of-discovery effect it had on him.

Re: Karen Janszen - Dolphin Tale
Saw it last week.
All in all, a very decent film for a kid's film.
It isn't Rango, but whaddya gonna do.
Things I liked:
1) Very tasteful treatment of a key theme in this tale: the evolution of prosthetics in no small part due to 'War on Terror' casualties. As this is a kid's film, perfectly understandable why very little is talked about on this subject other than a few brief views of the VA hospital.
2) Winter. Just goes to show you, life will find a way.
Things I didn't like so much:
1) The latest reinvention of Flipper as the cute loveable critter. The dolphin viewing/hugging, marine park, and related industries just got another decade's worth of reinvigoration.
Dolphins are absolutely intelligent, but they're also big wild predators.
They look cute because of the anthropocentric grin they have, but they also do things like kill baby dolphins (in order to have dolphin kids sooner?) and kill porpoises when their ranges overlap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBul5j30V98
