Many years ago I was at the mall that was (at that time) the biggest in the world, the Mall of America in Minnesota. I was with a colleague from Egypt, killing an extra couple hours before our flight. That day the mall was rather sad, more empty than full, clearly failing as a commercial enterprise (though not anywhere near as bad as the video above depicts). I offered to my Egyptian friend that nations seem to have personalities, and that perhaps the American personality might be "taking a thing too far", and that the giant mall was a monument to our national personality.
I would hate to think China is striving to overtake us in our worst aspects.

I read somewhere that because Chinese banks don't require loans to be repaid, occupancy don't matter.
