  • Richard Muller: A politics neutral view on Climate Change

Dr. Muller is director of the Berkeley Earth Project - whose goal is to compile a politically neutral, scientifically defensible and consistent temperature record based on 100% of data available (as opposed to 10% as GISS does).

It should be noted that he is very much a believer in CO2 as the cause of global warming, yet is enough of an objective scientist to recognize the problems that have arisen due to blatant advocacy (as opposed to science).

    1) Even the IPCC admits that if cloud cover increases 2% due to increased water vapor (as opposed to not - IPCC's and the climate model's assumption), even by their views, there will be no global warming

    2) The US is responsible for about 1/4 of CO2 emissions thus far (to date)

    3) Copenhagen was about CO2 intensity, not absolute emissions. Thus if the emerging economies continue to grow, CO2 emissions from them will be triple (3x) that of the US by 2020, and nine (9) times that of the US by 2030.

    4) Thus all the measures in the US are nothing but feel good. Whatever the US does, it won't matter.

    5) Mention of HimalayaGate, AmazonGate, ocean acidification - all not scientifically based.

    6) Any methods of reducing CO2 emissions and/or intensity which are expensive are a waste of time. Because the emerging economies cannot afford them and won't use them. Any attempts to reduce carbon [or provide alternative energy] must be cheap.

    7) IPCC itself says that all warming until 1957 was NOT human caused

    8) Automobiles itself contribute only 1/40th a degree of warming. Priuses therefore don't do squat to stop global warming - unless China does nothing but buy Priuses [and stops using coal to produce electricity]

    9) Alaska has not warmed for 30 years

    10) Antarctica was predicted to increase in ice mass due to increased water vapor evaporation from oceans (in 2001). In fact ice mass has decreased. IPCC and its climate models have been wrong.

    11) Hurricane frequency is flat to down, tornadoes is going down, wildfire area has increased, but number has decreased.

    12) ClimateGate - public acquittal, but scientific fraud "You're not allowed to do this in science"

    13) Temperature records in US and elsewhere are shoddy

    14) A great graph on oil resources: Canada's reserves jumped considerably due to the price of oil going over $60

    15) US has huge reserves of coal and natural gas (latter due to shale)

    16) China is building 1 GW coal fired electricity plant every week

    17) The US energy crisis isn't an overall energy crisis - it is a liquid energy crisis. Dr. Muller predicts the majority of the US will shift to CNG or CTL (compressed natural gas, coal to liquids) - see David Archibald presentation

In general, a presentation worth listening too although Dr. Muller relies too much on proponents to derive his energy views - i.e. wind energy a gigantic boondoggle.
