  • The Fed's choice: High Inflation or High Unemployment

Can Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke really keep inflation to 2% by "raising interest rates in 15 minutes" as he stated in Dec. 2010? No. Finished goods inflation is already as high as it was in 2007 when civilian unemployment was only 4.8% versus 9.4% today. But home prices are falling again. The Fed has to choose between commodity inflation or a re-crashed housing market and even higher unemployment. Which will he choose? The gold market knows.

    Raw video version here.

I thought it was amusing that Bernanke had a slip of the tongue and said 'flation, before correcting to say inflation.

Freudian slip about his deflation tunnel vision?

FRED, this clip was both very informative and easy to understand. Bravo!

One minor comment, why not display iTulip's logo at the end along with "iTulip.com" to further build up the brand no?

          I'll second that!

IMHO, this video was far more useful/worthwhile than the other recent one. EJ's voice and intelligent commentary trumps sound effects any day of the week in my book.

          Well done!

Yeah for interactive graph commentary. I generally follow the logic of EJ's analysis via charts but it really does add something to be walked through the charts and their significance. But I love a well laid out argument in prose that I can read at my own pace. Is there some magic way to combine the two? It would be a killer combination.

Purely as inspiration, I suggest this:

Yes, agree with previous comments about the graph with one added suggestion. It would also help if when using the highlight for each part of the graphs on the chart, if you use the same colour as the part of the graph you are describing; blue highlight for blue line for example. That way there is no possibility of a confusion as to which line you are describing. But, yes, much better than the first.

It surely has to be remembered that Hans had the full support from perhaps the best funded and staffed IT group in the West, the BBC. But then again, yes, that is by far the best such video I have seen so far. A very good starting point for all of us to remember what the potential can be for such vivid demonstrations of data.

May I also suggest that a couple of days at this conference in France might prove useful in EJ getting up to speed with the potential. While MIP is targeted at every level, there is much about the interactive web.

Much better and more like a Ted Talk. I can now see where EJ is going with these video productions and approve.

                          Nicely done EJ!

The way it sounds is that over the next 6 months, we will have commodity price spikes, followed by another dip in the overall economy, triggered by those high prices.

                          2011 a replay of 2008?

same here. very well done. One thing though, the volume on the Bernake videos was much much louder than EJ's which was somewhat of a pain.

I agree. But not as painful as a bifurcated economy on the, shall we say, 'legacy-skilled' workers! Yikes!
