We're getting there, I think. I see the recent increase in talk of currency, trade and tariff wars in the main stream media as intentionally setting up Americans to be pissed at some other nation when prices for essentials rise, while the economy and jobs weaken further.

They are turning up the heat. The pot shall boil nicely, in due time.

Try this: one long cnbc link. You should get a flash video.

i was interested in the fact that a question was asked about possible currency controls. it's a bit odd to see "the news" finally pondering issues we've been kicking around for years.

Since 1998 we've stayed more or less two to four years ahead of the curve. There's a reason our tag line is "You heard it here first." Skipping over the 1998 to 2000 period, the current crisis was laid out in detail:

Frankenstein Economy, March 2006: Forewarns of an inevitable banking system disaster that unaccountable lending will create.

Economic M.A.D., April 2006: Explains how the balance of economic terror keeps China from abandoning the dollar regime, but warns that accidents happen. The term "balance of economic terror" is subsequently adopted in high level policy circles.

Credit Risk Pollution, April 2006: Explains how banks have buried toxic credit waste all over the world for the past decade the way manufacturing companies buried chemical waste in barrels in the ground for decades. When it finally reached critical levels and create a credit crisis, a taxpayer funded toxic credit Superfund will be needed. Four years later we got TARP. The term "toxic credit" is born.

Energy and Money, May 2006: Explains that we're running out of oil and there is no viable substitute. The concept of the Peak Cheap Oil Economic Cycle is born.

US exchange rate and capital controls or bust? September 23, 2008: iTulip is the first to explore the possibility of capital controls if reflation fails and capital flight intensifies.

There are days when we sit around talking about the world our analysis points us to two to four years from now and we get so depressed we spend the rest of the session talking about how to talk about it without getting depressed.

I hear you. My wife and I have established a ritual which has changed slightly over the last few years.

Three years ago (2007): read the latest iTulip posting, feel nervous, walk downstairs and pour glass of scotch while explaining to wife.
Two years ago (2008): read the latest posting, slight twitching by the end, scotch is now upstairs across from my desk. Wife pours wine for herself after explanation.
One year ago (2009): read Part I, pour scotch to have on hand before starting Part II. Wife now has wine when I start explanation, reads articles herself now.
Current (2010): Announce new posting up. Wife pours double shot for us both before we start reading

Eh - depression is a sign of misguided expectations. Until one's dying breath has been exhaled (some would say even past then), there are always ways to improve the world about one, better than it would have been otherwise.

If Robinson Crusoe had spent his time bemoaning the lack of a way off his island, he would have had a sadder and shorter existence. Instead he got busy making himself a way to live there.

Lose no sleep over what might have been. Rather delight in the continued opportunity to engage with what is.

Broken link - missing the /forums/ as usual (thanks to an annoying misfeature in the vBulletin interface)

Try US exchange rate and capital controls or bust?

PS: Is Cognac good enough or only scotch will do?
