  • Niall Ferguson on BNN - Sept 25/09

Historian Niall Ferguson on Canada's BNN this am. Approx 18 minute interview.

With regard to his comments on China, I think the jury is still out. But with respect to the other stuff the word is slowly getting out to the mainstream media and the politicians. Particularly noted that he is one of the very few that is expecting ~1000 bank failiures in the USA - the forecast figure that EJ first published a little while back. And also his commentary at about 14:00 about "exit strategies".

More people, including the political class, will listen to Ferguson than, say, the often hysterical Peter Schiff...even if much of the underlying fundamental message is the same.

Really shocking statements from him wrt Chinese economy wrt domestic consumption, etc... I have to wonder if he was duped during his visit to Hong Kong. Doesn't make much sense that in light of a 30-40 million unemployment spike in China that now they have suddenly turned into consumers and are responding. Seems precisely the story that China would wish to sell at this point, though.

      Great find Sir GRG55.

It appears to me that Ferguson is less and less patient with the state of affairs in the financial world.

My chinese colleague tells me that businesses in Guandong province are having difficulty finding enough workers.

In a BBC World debate on the crisis held in Istanbul, Niall Ferguson, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School in the United States, said: "The crisis has accelerated a shift from west to east."

"That means rebalancing not only economically... but rebalancing geopolitically, which I think makes some people nervous," Ferguson said.

"For the foreseeable future the US will be growing at a much lower rate while China is in fact growing at a much faster rate," he added.

The shift is having far-reaching effects around the world.
