And, averages are ill-suited to reality. You actually think that Cubans should go backwards to Batista?
Sure it would be more expensive. But it may be even better - if Havana was restored to its former beauty from the run down Communist hellhole it has become, stinking with rotting buildings that no one cares for.

Bad tyrants cause Communist revolution. Cuba was rich despite Batista not because of him. But to say that Castro is somehow an improvement over Batista is being seriously disingenuous. Its the old story in Latin America - things go well for a while and then politically things get effed up. Then the economy gets effed up as well. Has happened so often in Argentina.

You would. I happen to love American cars from the 50s. And they're everywhere. What was amazing to me was the sheer resourcefulness of the Cubans - even without any spare parts and the ban on American imports, how do they manage to keep them well maintained?

Cuba is already ruined. What tourists see isn't really Cuba.

This is what's left of the maternity ward
at the Julio Trigo Hospital in Arroyo Naranjo, near Havana -- opened in 1989.

And how many tourists buy food with ration cards?

Fly to Canada and then purchase a ticket to Cuba at the airport once you are there. In Cuba you can request that they stamp a seperate piece of paper, not your passport.

            Boom. You're in Cuba.

You don't have to worry about the passport being stamped. I have an Indian passport and it has no Cuban stamp. The Cubans never stamp the passport, they stamp the travel visa which you have to retain as long as you are in the country. When you leave the country, they take it back. The passport never gets a Cuban stamp.

Or, I've heard you can get there by flying first to Mexico.
