ISP's confirm '2012: The Year The Internet Ends'

The issue of "Net Neutrality" crops up again!

Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP's all over the globe will reduce Internet access to a TV-like subscription model, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit. These 'other' sites would then lose all their exposure and eventually shut down, resulting in what could be seen as the end of the Internet.

Won't the ISP's put themselves out of business then ?
In the Netherlands something on the same line was tried with football (soccer) coverage on TV. Practically no subscriptions where sold, Football clubs subsequently had far less income from sponsors/advertising and the whole thing was abandoned. Something on the same line will happen with the internet if these planns get a (complete) worldwide acceptance.

Considering these comparable scenarios Internet usage will plummet by initially 90 % and therefor won't be economically viable anymore. ISP's will go bust and the whole thing will be abandoned.

No worries for iTulip (i hope).

Why can't another internet be setup? From what I know about the net, which is admittedly not much, there's nothing about the system that makes it prohibitively unitary.

Also, what's stopping me from setting up a new telecommunications network that chooses not to charge people for going to certain sites?

It is prohibitively expensive to setup a broadband system that covers everbody in a given area -- that is one of the reasons most broadband is supplied by cable companies, telephone companies and now perhaps by electric power companies -- all of these services are monopolies in a given service area.

Several users write in to gleefully note that this Belgian woman claims she'll make love to every virgin that supports network neutrality. Tanya Devereaux has previously used sexual promises to try and get votes for a failed run for the Belgian senate.

Devereaux, who could probably even change the stripes of telecom talking heads like Scott Cleland (assuming he qualifies), has this to say about her mission:

I'm using sex in a positive way to spread awareness. The reason why only virgins can apply is because I don’t want to make this promise to such a large amount of people that I’ll have to turn some down.

Reasonable, given the number of global Internet virgins is so very small.

She continues:

Net neutrality is paramount to safeguard free speech and innovation on the Internet. With only one arguably negative side-effect: an unusual amount of today's Internet users are virgin. That's a problem I intend to solve. In history, man has always waged war for freedom. Now it's time to obtain our freedom with love.

I note that the two hegemons proposing this are from North America.

What remains to be seen is whether the BRIC nations will go along... which I very much doubt.

I also very much doubt the developing world goes along.....

I believe this gambit will fail because it costs very much less to subscribe to satellite TV, and that offers hundreds of channels for one low price... including the BRICs and the developing world...

Whether the Internet survives in North America.... given the propensity of the corporate owned media to behave like that of the third reich... remains to be seen... it's demise would be unfortunate... because I find it a very useful research tool... however, we scientists managed before it... and likely will manage after it...
