Chavez is giving the world - and Venezuelans in particular - a tutorial on the meaning of the word "fiat".

Using natural resources to help the poor and not the multi-nationals? Revolutionary eh! Of course this country -like Bolivia is going to be under attack by central bankers -who abhor anyting that does not put other countries resources into their institutional investments -like Rio Tinto/Bechtel etc.

Yeah, so did Hitler. As long as you weren't poor and non-Aryan, that is.
        Stalin, too.

Doubt Mega is drinking Haterade, but are you drinking Chavez Koolade? What little help he's given the poor (and I'll grant some of that) is massively overwhelmed by the destruction he has inflicted on the country, its infrastructure and now currency. Venezuela is and has been going down the tubes -- my wife works for an international NGO with many, many contacts there and every report she hears (official and otherwise) backs that.

Very sad. Venezuela was able to produce one of the best systems of musical education for kids in the world, El Sistema. [It] "has 30 symphony orchestras. But its greatest achievement are the 250,000 children who attend its music schools around the country, 90 percent of them from poor socio-economic backgrounds."

when countries like Venezuela fail -- well -- that seems to be the best time to go invest.

NGOs like USAID -a known CIA organ? OR Doctors without Borders or the Red Cross -all being unwittingly and wittingly used by governments to spy on other countries.

Sorry - but NGOs don't have the halo they used and quite frankly -I doubt many of the sincere workers even no that the information they gather is being funneled to organizations with less altruistic motives. bwhahahahahahahaha! ROTFL.

Uh....no, WorldVision if it makes any difference to you. Not to mention she's perfectly fluent in Spanish and has many friends and contacts in Venezuela aside from what she hears via the company.

And, no, we've not had any secret meetings with CIA handlers.

Are you for real? It'll be interesting to watch Venezuela over the next few weeks as Chavez's latest decrees/threats are coming closer to his having to declare martial law IMO (not they they are far from it now).

Seriously - are you so blind to reality -I am astounded that you think the world is so clean cut! Sometimes -I wonder why you bother to post.

                      http://www.oss.net/dynamaster/file_a...20US%20NGO.pdf

No its not an indictment -but perhaps reading this -may illuminate you on the value of government funding for NGOs in particular areas of conflict and gathering intelligence. It is pathetic that you need a source to understand the obvious.

I am totally disheartened. No doubt your a neer do well -who feels he knows everything.

Also you may find this to be interesting:

According to World Vision's 2006 Consolidated Financial Statements, around 40% of their revenue comes from private sources, including individuals, World Vision clubs in schools, corporations and foundations. 27% comes from governments and multilateral aid agencies such as USAID and the Department for International Development (DFID) in the UK.

So I am not sure with separation of state and church -why I as a taxpayer have to support these peoples jobs.

The Chavez fan, the individual singing the praises of Argentina's attempts to grab it's CB reserves -- "A good example of why Central Banks should NEVER be independent." was your comment was it not -- is saying *I'm* blind to reality?

I'll grant the government has interactions with NGOs -- no doubt it has interest in what they see (especially in major conflict regions). But that's a *long* way from implying CIA fronting or control. Knowing many of these people and seeing what they do and go through trying to get the job done, I find your comments appalling.

Obviously we are *not* going to find common ground. At first I thought you had to be a troll, but you apparently really believe what you believe. Fair enough.

I'll take a look at your paper, a cursory glance proved interesting, but for the future we might as well add each other to our respective ignore buckets.

I used to be a fan of Chavez, but not so much anymore.

When I visited Venezuela in 2005, I could see some of the changes for the better that he has made in the lives of the poor majority of the country. He has broken at least some of the power of the local oligarchs. He has also politicized the powerless with his movement and gotten them involved in the governing structure of the nation. I visited the the very poor barrios and people in the hills that surround Caracas, and I was very impressed with the literacy campaign that the Chavez government had inititated. Also the clinics his government had set up in the hill barrios - many of the barrio folks told us that this was the first time they had ever had access to doctors, at prices they could afford. There are good reasons that he has been re-elected more than once - his government has made a big difference in the lives of the majority of Venezuelans who are very poor.

My disillusionment stems from the fact that he seems intent on hanging onto to power personally. Rather than aspiring to be like Fidel, he should be focused on the creating the political economy that ensures that his reforms endure. As one of the community leaders in the barrio told us: "what is important is not any single individual, what is important is The Movement to impove the standard of living and quality of life for all Venezuelans".

A strong leader is always needed to to guide people that is why they are the first to be murdered. Jesus/Gandhi/Kennedy. They shall be overcome by the dull witted imposters who live only to gain from others. With smiling faces and false earnestness do they become the living leeches of the people who are but mirrors of nature. As Christ himself said -"Who amongst yee is free from sin that yee shall cast the first stone". Who amongst you does not know the the life you lead is upon the backs of innocents trammeled and enslaved for the greedy few and the bourgeoisie- the greatest enemy of equality and fairness.

Translation: The first man who, having enclosed a piece of ground, bethought himself of saying This is mine, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars, and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows: Beware of listening to this imposter; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody.

i think the sweetest people in the world would have to be bushmen or san people of southern africa. Their indigenous culture had no concept of ownership whatsoever, or it disappeared very quickly once children realised all they needed was a few sticks and a bit of animal skin to survive and that they lived in the land of plenty. I met a daughter of a long time missionary in namibia, an incredibly attractive and intelligent girl, who told me with tears welling in her eyes that she'd given up working with them because she'd realised they were going to die out no matter what she did and it was too heartbreaking for her to experience that so closely. Thinking back to that I can't help thinking that we should give up with the self congratulatory theorising of property ownership being the goose that laid the golden egg and call a spade a spade, we're just a bunch of self interested pricks.
