That's the kind of thing that happens Mike when we engage in loose talk about "when it might be time to open fire."
The young man has been charged with two counts of first degree murder.
I expect he will be tried as an adult, convicted, and executed for the murders he committed.

Re: At what point would you open fire?
There is a great difference between going out looking for trouble when your life or others is not under threat ...........& being sat down & coming under attack.
Your a woman suddenly surrounded by a screeming mob & no where to retreat!
I wondered at what point would I use deadly force?........as someone whom used very little force. in his life.
Turn the other cheek?...fine if its silly or minor.....but what if someone trying to rape your wife?
No one want to be in that "place" ........but you can find yourself there without warning.
Many years ago late one night I was walking about 2 miles from my home, mostly just farmland with a road running though it.
Suddenly with out warning a car stopped & two other cars stopped as well..........it turned out that they were taxi drivers & they dragged 2 scumbags out of the car
The taxi drove off & these pricks saw me in the distance & charged. I assume they were looking for a fight &/or money .......this might have been a problem but for the fact that I was out walking my Dog.
Sherry was a VERY large German Shepard dog, bad temped bitch whom was ALWAYS up for a fight, just as they with 10 foot of me I stood aside & they suddenly saw her. Oh Boy did that change their mind! I taken her off the lead & held her only by her by hand........all I had to do was open my hand & she was "Weapons Free".
He fell backwards & than ran for dear life......... in fact he ran on his knees!
The "Threat" had retreated & I went "Weapons hold".

Re: At what point would you open fire?
According to the Hebrew scholars I've read, the closer translation is probably "Thou shalt not murder." One is morally obligated to kill in self-defense, altho taking a life should always be the last resort, not the first resort.
The problem with situations like the above are that they can escalate so quickly that the victim may not have the time or physical space to try a less-than-lethal means of self defense. A potential assailant 20 feet away can cross that distance in less than 2.5 seconds. That doesn't give one much time to contemplate choices. These assailants were within arms length. Pull out a weapon at that close range and you risk having it taken from you. Best not to let anyone get that close.
The best weapon is mental preparedness. Keep situational awareness at all times. Be aware of your surroundings, the mood of the people around you, all the exits. If things go bad and you can't get out you can try de-escalation, but when people are too hopped up on rage or drugs to be reasoned with (as was the case with those protesters), be prepared to defend yourself.
Somewhere else on the forum I posted a Catherine Austin Fitts interview. Among many interesting things, she discusses the mindset of the protesters. It's well worth watching, IMO.
Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Re: At what point would you open fire?
Originally posted by rjwjr View PostI disagree with your expectation. From the videos I have viewed and the arrest records of the deceased I believe these to be seemingly bad people doing bad things. More importantly, they were the aggressors. My expectation in this unfortunate situation is for the accused to be exonerated by reason of self-defense.
The killer might successfully evade justice with some kind of self-defense argument, funny things do indeed happen in court rooms. I would hope not. The killer left his own town and drove over for the purpose of becoming involved in the protests. He had full knowledge of the tensions he chose to participate in.
What's next? Can I go to the OSU/Michigan game with a loaded .45, quietly mutter some insults to a riled-up losing fan hoping he'll punch me in the nose? Can I stand my ground and blow his head off? Sucks to be you, let's get this blood off our jackets and go get pizza. One less Michigan fan. I knew one of those idiots would take the bait.
That seems like a bad way to run a society because it will almost certainly result in escalating violence and bloodshed.
All the best to you rjwjr, hope to see more of you around here.
This is a photo of the two men who were murdered.
