Well, certainly not him specifically.

But has the era when in which we have felt safe in our public spaces (without resorting to a police state) come to an end?

These guys didn't have to cross a border, or any other checkpoint, to do what they did, so more TSA security theater can't convince people to relax. They had been living here for many years before they were radicalized. And others (Timothy McVeigh, etc.) have demonstrate that you don't need to be an immigrant, or a muslim, to sign up.


There have been "suicide fads" before, and suicide by cop is also an established concept. Could the next phase of this country's domestic security history revolve around our response to an "IED fad"?

Means, motive, and opportunity are everywhere.

There's a lot of young guys in the US with more testosterone than sense, disillusioned, and looking for someone to blame. Columbine inspired copycats, why wouldn't the Boston Marathon do the same? It's not like the technology is much of a barrier, all that's really needed is the will. The recent interest in regulating guns would seem quaint compared to a crackdown following a string of home-grown terrorists using homemade explosive devices. The press would be asked not to report on them, to minimize copycats. The police would want, and get, expanded powers of search and seizure. Fortress America can't defend against the enemies within.

He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither. People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.

will be forgotten.

The question of how many lives is freedom worth will once again become less abstract, and even more so when the individual lives lost are not those of volunteers in an army, but random snapshots of our population.

How does a free country respond?
How does a country pretending to be free respond?

Which one would the US be?

we've seen this before. Not to marginalize what occurred, but we are a nation of 300+ million pp, and we are going to have our share of total nutjobs who will do whatever the voices in their heads tell them, be they immigrants or not. To fall into the trap of allowing the few to control and scare the many is just what those who seek to consolidate power want. Never give it to them.
