Mike, The Germans started WW 1 because they wanted to topple the British Empire and then become the preeminent power in Europe. They lost the war but a hundred years later, I'd say their goal was finally achieved. Often, it takes a very long time to achieve one's historical goals.

PS: The war had nothing to do with the Arch Duke's assassination. Sorry, but no one is that popular.
