    Re: Words fail me

I file this under the culture of violence that we have been cultivating. Sick stuff.

That is terrible news. I hope the families of the victims are able to receive justice.

Violent crime in the UK has actually been decreasing since 1995, though. So I don't think there is really a culture of violence that is being cultivated.

Look into the girls' eyes, if you can bear to, and you will see that their souls are gone.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

When I see stuff this bad I try to remember two things:

1.) I ask myself the question of whether this has ALWAYS happened(to a greater or lesser degree is irrelevant) and we are simply hearing more about it due to the changing nature of instant global communication, mass media business model, etc.....or are we broken? I think it's the former.

2.) I always try to find enough good news stories(and they are out there) to drown out the bad. Playing with my kids certainly helps.

I'm no psychologist or psychiatrist, but I reckon "doomer porn" like this is the mental equivalent of smoking a carton of unfiltered cigarettes.

I don't want to know any more about the story and the broken kids involved......but I'd be keen to know more about their parents and family lives.

As I am unfamiliar with the UK, I do not know what caused the spike in the 90s; however, it has largely returned to the trend that it was at before then. Regardless, I think these things have always happened. One need only look at our history to see this. And then you must also realize the dearth of statistics from back in those days and a much smaller media and lack of an Internet. These days, we are connected to everyone and everything and all the world's happenings flow towards us constantly. It is a blessing and curse because there is far more awareness of things, which is a double-edged sword. I think prior to the Internet and the media technologies that allow for us to spread information in the form of text, pictures, sound, and video, the world was as corrupt as it is now, but we simply weren't aware of it for the lack of those things. The Internet and all the other technologies that have come about have greatly magnified our ability to inform ourselves.

Ask yourself, where would you be without the Internet in these times? Probably as misinformed as a lot of people.

And you are all too right in saying this is the mental equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes. It just isn't a good thing and it can make us forget all the good things.

Still holds true that violent crime has been declining for centuries -

kinda doubt it, methinks they'd be lynched for that sort of 'fun' there...

but by the looks of the 'boys' i'll bet this is the sort of 'hobby art' roll playing they get into,

with them and the grrrlz lookin like they'd be right at home at this kind of show

quite wholesome entertainment, when they arent otherwise out 'socializing' and looking for new friends to 'play with'
