Mish reports on what is happening. I don't take stock in his prognostications but his reporting is quite good. And I like his viewpoint on freedom and the Fed.

But I agree, this "gold does well in either 'flation" is silliness.

The plain fact is that Mish is a little too married to the deflation hypothesis.

We are all blinded by our viewpoints and concepts, aren't we? I certainly more than most people because I have a dogmatic view of what I think is right.

Dan Amerman is someone I like to follow. In a recent article, he pointed out that the Fed very, very rapidly began inflating madly around 1933, turning on a dime.

The fact is that the gubmint prints money one way or another, and there is no way in H*ll that money will ever become *more* valuable over any length of time. It only goes in one direction.

The deflation fearmongers serve the gubmint position very nicely because they bang the drum loudly for more gubmint interference in the economy, less freedom, more taxation (either directly or through currency depreciation).

That's why it's so popular to declaim the urgency of deflation.

Reality is, deflation is wonderful for savers and wage earners and would be great if it were allowed to happen, but it won't be. Mish doesn't know better but I still like his writing.

Does Mish even represent himself as a reporter? As fair, balanced and impartial?

to me, "reporting" usually presents all pertinent views.

Mish only ever presents data that supports his view or data that he can set up as a straw man to push over.

Mish doesn't report - he's an "opinion typer", an editorialist/columnist, maybe an "absurdist" and is trying to "pull a Cramer" (which would make him an entertainer, not a reporter)

you have to read his 'reporting' the same as msm reporting but in reverse... accounting for the ideology and ignorance filters.

he applies three illiteracy filters... historical illiteracy, financial illiteracy, and economics illiteracy... and then the ideology filter that he uses to compensate for the aformentioned trifecta of illiteracies.

eg, cannot tell asset price from commodity price inflation.

eg, cannot tell currency collapse cost push inflation from domestic money supply induced inflation (even friedman in his later years admitted he was wrong to neglect this point, as if trade didn't matter).

eg, 'gold is money' ... historically wrong. gov't made gold into money... silver, too.

eg, 'all gov't is bad'... just plain ignorant. the ideology of a fatass, populist keyboard whacker who never visited a country with weak gov't.

try once a month or so but find him unreadable. compare to... http://baselinescenario.com/

Spartacus and Metalman are two of Mish's most ardent fans. Post anything about Mish with these two around and it's instantly a love-fest. :p
