I assign a very low probability to this eventuality. I personally believe that the worst case simply involves rationing and some elements of a command economy.

It's just that this particular topic is at the intersection of my love of end-of-the-world fiction and interest in military/security topics. I probably should have made that clear. The above speculation is just a flight of fantasy -- "what would I do if..." and is not a recommendation for planning.

The two posts in this thread outline what I actually think is reasonable. This post is another more "serious" consideration of what might happen.

Besides - what else is there to invest in right now? [/QUOTE]

The eternal verities? Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis. Longer shelf life than tobacco. Less bulky than alcohol. Easier to swallow than gold.

Are you sure about that? Check out this article - where it appears that in Japan (where people eat gold) that they are now finding 2kg of gold for every tonne of sewage !!

Is thas perhaps your new moniker ASH? "Most dispassionately analytical member".
You're right metalman, he has the analytical intelligence of an economist and the cold disposition of a war planner.

Here's the way I see it. In EJ's latest interview they foresee potentially 20% unemployment, what logical conclusion can we come to about crime rates in this situation?
I bought 6 months supply of dried food, have I ever lost sleep about having too much food? No way.
I stocked up a little on seeds to plant about a half acre garden, never lost sleep about having too many seeds.
Never lost sleep about having a few too many boxes of ammo, silver or survival gear either.
