The monopoly of violence by the State can easily be hidden under a clinical description; however, a picture can reveal the objective brutality of it.

      Leaving Fear Behind

Leaving Fear Behind (in Tibetan, Jigdrel) is a heroic film shot by Tibetans from inside Tibet, who longed to bring Tibetan voices to the Beijing Olympic Games. With the global spotlight on China as it rises to host the XXIX Olympics, Tibetans wish to tell the world of their plight and their heartfelt grievances against Chinese rule. The footage was smuggled out of Tibet under extraordinary circumstances. The filmmakers were detained soon after sending their tapes out, and remain in detention today.

In a remarkable coincidence, filming concluded in early March 2008 on the eve of the eruption of unprecedented mass Tibetan protests across the Tibetan plateau. Shot primarily in the eastern provinces of Tibet, the film provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of the Tibetan people and their longstanding resentment of Chinese policies in Tibet.

The filmmakers traversed thousands of miles, asking ordinary Tibetans what they really feel about the Dalai Lama, China, and the Olympic Games. The filmmakers gave their subjects the option of covering their faces, but almost all of the 108 people interviewed agreed to have their faces shown on film, so strong was their desire to express themselves to the world. Excerpts from twenty of the interviews, including a self-recorded interview of the filmmaker himself, are included in the 25 minute film.

The footage reveals with stark clarity that Tibetans are frustrated and embittered by the deterioration and marginalization of Tibetan language and culture; the destruction of the lifestyle of Tibetan nomads through Chinese forced settlement policies; the lack of religious freedom and the vilification of the Dalai Lama; and the broken promises made by the Chinese government to improve conditions in Tibet in the run up to the Olympic games. All are united in their reverence for the Dalai Lama and long for him to return, and as some even dream, to attend the Olympic Games.

Guys, there are really two sides to the tibet - china story.

In the western world one finds mostly only one half of the truth.

I'm not sure what makkies view is but my understanding of China's side of the story is:

            1) Tibet was an medieval feudal society where the people were oppressed by the Tibetan overlords. The Chinese are helping the Tibetans overthrow their oppressors.

            2) China is protecting its' southern flank to prevent a scenario similar to Mexico and the US where Indian immigrants would spill over the Himalayas and filter into Chinese society. The Communists are apparently very big on maintaining the dominance of the Han ethnic group. (The Hans being mainstream "Chinese")

The following is not meant to be a good argumentation, just some bullet-points thrown in.

              • There is a generic bias in the western world towards the argumentation of the dalai lama and his followers.

              • There is a generic notion in the western world imagining the poor suppressed Tibetan minority vs. the bad ugly "Communists" central power.

o That's mostly because of 60 years of "PR campaign" of the dalai travelling the world.

              • This showed the world two things. 1. How does a yellow cap Buddhist monk looks like & 2. His argumentation of the suppressed minority in Tibet.

              • The monk followers of him in Tibet and south Asia are very radicalized. Not the nice religious men one might expect. (Have a look on the rallies earlier this year. Check the economist from that time.)

              • You seldom hear about other minorities in china, such as Uighurs.

              • The thrown out Tibetan elite clan of the fifties were no humanitarians towards their subjects. The dalai is part of that clan.

              • Yes, Beijing definitely does not react calm in this regard, but notice that geographical integrity is a major major issue for any Chinese gov. It's part of their legitimation. This goes for any Chinese leader in history. One can not underestimate that. They also apologize for bad weather.

              • One can ask people in France and Germany if their tradition and culture is deteriorating - (by let's say modern times) - some will say "yes".

              • Ask younger Tibetans if they dream of Lhasa or of Shanghai.(aka culture imperialism the Chinese way)

In someways, not dissimilar to the annexation of America by the Europeans -- except with some history of the "Silk Road" thrown in.

The Chinese side of the argument (both of the government and solidly reflected in the opinion of the people) comes down to a simple point: One Big China. If you understand the historical context for this ambition, then you can predict the fate of Tibet (also Taiwan).

haha, 30 years old photos, nice job by friendsoftibet.org. lol

but seriously speaking, this crude method of having the head blown off is less painful than shaking for 10 minutes on the electric chair or 10 minutes of spasm after the injection.
