My dear itulip cummunity,
As of November 13th my wife and I have a new addition to our family, a son we named Julian. As I'm finding out quickly, parenthood is essentially a series of choices we have to make in order to do what we think is best for our offspring. I've thought long and hard about whether or not to sign our children up for Social Security, a system which I can clearly see is nearly bankrupt, grossly mismanaged, fundamentally unsustainable, and in my oppinion immoral. I think at the very least it would be decent of me to let Julian make up his own mind about this when he's of working age instead of entering him into a life long binding contract without his consent.
I can't seem to find a CPA in my area that has any idea about not having a SS#. They all seem to get this dumbfounded expression and say that they've never dealt with this before. Admittedly I live in California, but is it really so uncommon to not want to accept this socialist program? My Question is this, can I claim my son on my taxes if he has a Tax Identification Number instead of a Social Security Number? Is there a law or statute of some sort requiring a social security number to be claimed as a dependent?
