Megafon is a big carrier in St. Petersburg, but I think they are still 3rd in line behind Beeline and MTS.
If you believe that Russia will continue to grow - the tide will rising no matter what you choose.
I just don't like stock market investments there because, frankly, the listed companies don't need shareholder cash for expansion. Public listings are largely cashout mechanisms.
But then, that is no different than the US. -

Megafon is the national cell operator in Russia. They were very aggressive at the beginning to get the market share. If I remember right these are the same guys who has Alfa-Bank and TNK-BP.
Agree with c1ue. Most of the big well capitalized companies in Russia have a kind of primary owner (now shareholder
). So in a long run you always be headed by the interests of particular group which could be different then increasing your stock value.
But as a company they have been pretty good and very price competitive comparing with MTS and Beeline (2 other major companies).Comment

Alfa does own part of Megafon, but also owns part of Vimpelcom (Beeline)
Alfa's part is more as a corporate raider in this instance though.
Megafon is the crown jewel for IPOC - which is headquartered in the Caribbean. Makes sense for a Russian mobile operator eh?Comment
