Well, you've become slightly less "Armageddon-ish" as time wore on Miker. Weeks, months and years gone by and the big, bad, bada-boom-SPLAT! crash didn't arrive, so you shifted into a slightly less frantic doomer gear. Something like "a kinder, gentler, (less totally-freaked-out) Mega", or summat to that effect.

I think the biggest freaked out doomer on iTulip now is Kraknisse, frankly. He's even more freaked out than you were at your peak-freaked-outness, and that was really freaked out! Something about the "mellowing of the years" must have set in for you old sport.

I was sitting here explaining to wife this guy in England who has rather bad dyslexia whose posts cause me to laugh more than anyone else who posts on iTulup, not because of the dyslexia, but because I take it you've got the best sense of humor of anyone here.

She asked how old is he? I guess late 30's early 40's? What say you?

Keep putting up those articles that certainly no one here is looking for. You put up some good links, and I appreciate them.

attribute it to feakout burnout. a person can't stay hyped up for long... the sheer length of time it takes starts to sink in. imagine telling volcker in 1987 when he wrote that nyt editorial that the us trade and fiscal deficits 'can't go on much longer' that he had 22 years to wait for the shit to hit the fan? he'd have thought you were cracked.

Well, in my defence:
1. My country has been invaded in recent memory. The stories about secret police imprisonment, and escaping as war refugees, are like heirlooms in nearly every family. I don't want to go into details, but let's say that things can get bad, quickly, in a very personal way.
2. We had a common border with Russia during the Cold War. Spring of 1968, hundreds of Soviet tanks were roaring their engines on our border (literally a few meters from the border posts). The officers ran away, were recovered drunk in Sweden. Finlandization was an ever present threat.
3. Our financial crash in the 1980s was one of the top 5 post-WW2 (according to Nobel Laurate Stiglitz, it was the worst).
4. We used to live off of timber and fish. Our exports were fish, timber and people.
5. Oil is running out. We peaked 2005 at the latest in oil, and natural gas will last 20-50 years (optimistically).

6. The US security umbrella is not so watertight as it was. If the US come to help us, it's because they're after the last oil. The policy was always "hold for 3 days" until NATO troops arrive. Remember Narvik? It caused the fall of the Chamberlain government. Canadians withdrew their 3-day guarantee a few years back. We're counting on the US marines (Norwegian Air Landed Marine Expeditionary Brigade, NATO Composite Forces - NCF, Colocated Operating Base - COB, INVICTUS) and others. According to the army itself, "The Norwegian army is currently so small that it can only defend a single district in Oslo."
7. The Arctic is melting, bringing oil and a vital geostrategic route just outside my house. The Arctic Council, under Norwegian leadership, says "An Arctic war is getting closer". Se vis pacem, para bellum. Svalbard is a flash point (and here). Which friendly bear just sent military ships inside the 200 mile economic zone of which Arctic country?
8. Our entitlement programs are as bad as the US. Our oil-based SWF will last for only a few years after 2020. The level of personal indebtedness is higher than even the US or UK. Which is why oil wars like Georgia and Iran are a nightmare - we're the flip side of the mirror, geographically.
9. Most people have absolutely no clue about the wide span of possible futures for our country. Nothing may happen. But the setup does not look good. Militarily, it is worse than in the 1930s. Economically, we're running on the last oil fumes (like our main security partner, the US) Small, isolated, on a vital geostrategic flank, militarly very unprepared, in the face of a widening worldwide depression. Sounds a lot like the run-up to WW2.

So, I prepare in whatever way I can. Which includes coming here, to friendly Itulipers for advice. I'd rather be taunted for 10 years and end up looking like a fool, than be caught unprepared when things go bad, quickly.

I haven't posted the many developments on Iran here on ITulip, just because I don't want to freak you out. But a complacent "what, me worry" attitude is not exactly prudent right now. Guys, I'd love to meet you in 10 years over a bottle of champagne (or more, depending on your level of PM exposure) and have this thing confined to the financials. But Clausewitz says otherwise:

Krakknisse - My reference was just a gentle tweak, and it was also an expression of affection for the combination of doom with lucid investigation which you contribute. I've told you before, but your contributions here are among the most lucid, and the above indeed is a very strong response. I also find the potential issues it uncovers fascinating.

And please do post more details, about what you uncover Re: Russia > EU finlandization news and opinion, and also what you have referred to obliquely about news on developments Re: Iran. I for one will read each and every post on the above with great interest!

According to my sons the Asian women are great until you want to have a conversation of more complexity than 'what's for dinner'.

when did this celebration of mega's spelling skills (not 'baned' after 1000 posts!) turn into a misogynist's wife search thread? ever consider how asian women who are part of the 8000+ member community here might feel about another member saying asian women are ok up to 'conversation of more complexity than 'what's for dinner'? c'mon, guys. we can do better than this.
