We are fundamentally in 1998 on steroids. The El Nino is huge and I don't think anyone saw this coming. A year or so ago, there was a lot of maybe it's coming, maybe not as it stalled for months and months. So between last year and this year we're going to get this massive spike in average temperature as the ocean gives up some of the heat it absorbed over the last 17 years or so. The YOY temperature spikes are not just a little bigger than normal, they're off the charts.

But this won't last. When the El Nino is over, temperature rise will moderate again. Also PDO synced up with the El Nino and since it's a longer cycle, that doesn't always happen.

So here's a scenario that I haven't heard anyone talking about yet but it's a real possibility. This spike in temperature has been so large that when the El Nino and PDO subsides, average temperatures could actually drop slightly for a year or more. It will only offset the rise by maybe 2-3% but the earth likes balance so it's possible. If that happens, the circus will come to town and the clowns will talk about the end of global warming. I'm sure vt will be first in line. Maybe even clueless will come back to celebrate his pyrrhic victory.

Which of the claims are incorrect ?

There are many references to major publications. It should be easy to verify or falsify them.

I'm sure it's just a personal flaw of mine but I find it annoying when someone says "it should be easy to verify" and yet they're not willing to do so. First of all, the linked GISTEMP chart vt posted and I referenced did not show 4 years of cooling AND it was at least a decade old version of the chart. The only way one can come to the conclusion that there was four year cooling trend is to first start by cherry picking a very high temperature year and then average the next four years and - voila! - you have a 100% bullshit cooling trend.

It also helps if your intention is to lie, to not mention that the next year was the hottest on record. Unfortunately, those records have all been blown away by recent temperature records. Most recent GISTEMP below.

Your scenario for a future slight drop in temps seems likely, even without a detailed understanding of the El Nino/PDO interaction. A cursory look at the chart you provided shows several previous short-term drops following dramatic 2-year increases. Your prediction for the ensuing circus also seems likely, unfortunately. :-(

Oh Jesus Fark, why in the Hell do you kids keep going on about this? For chrissakes, climate deniers deny. It's what they do.

EJ gave iTulipers an out of this pointless argumentation. He did it by expressing a reasonable position that acknowledges the reality of climate change and the economic impact of efforts to roll it back. It wasn't a perfect position, but realistic and based on a minimally ideological and highly factual series of arguments. And after that he closed the topic for debate on iTulip.

He closed it. As in closed. Not open. Shut. Can we simply respect that?

Let the deniers look to factualists as crypto-commies and the factualist see denialists as corrupt or stupid. Our opinions about the science or the players and spectators won't have the slightest impact on the matter, and that's true if it's a grand decades long conspiracy, the mere vicissitudes of climate, a human engineered event, or the wrath of an angry sky god.

It doesn't matter what you think. Not at all. And really, we're just not that important to this planet or this universe. And our time is short. So very short.

The planet existed before humanity and it will exist after the humanity project is over. If we burn up the planet by means of greenhouse gas or hydrogen bombs, in short order on it's timescale, the planet will restore herself or adapt to its new condition.

And then one day even the planet, all of it, will be gone and nothing will remain of your grand accomplishments and tragedies. And all you here now and your children and grandchildren and theirs will be gone long before those events come to their logical end. And so will anyone who had even the slightest memory that you and yours ever existed. Why folks want to waste their time with this pointless jib-jab, I don't want to know.

But please, in the name of all that is good and decent, can we please just shut the ufck up about this - pro and con? The topic has been closed on iTulip for more than two years now.

I don't disagree with a thing you wrote, Woodsman. I personally got a bit disturbed/excited when I saw the latest GISTEMP data. Thank you for the reminder about the topic closure. Although I do think that the future of the planet and humanity are important subjects for people to discuss, despite the potential longer-term irrelevance, I can respect that closure here.

I'm happy to not talk about climate change but I'm not willing to let, what did you call them...oh yeah, the corrupt or stupid, post scientific charts, graphs or articles out of context to fit their political ideas. All this does is confuse people who have an interest in the subject but may not understand the slight of hand. As long as the, what did I call it...oh yeah, bullshit, is left standing on this site, I will explain why it's not correct.

With regard to the false equivalency attributed all I can say is some people say smoking causes cancer, others say not so much. Some say the FBI only wants to unlock one iPhone. Some say guns and soda both kill people so why talk about gun safety.

As for the nihilism, I can't help you there Woody. It's true, some think the earth will burn up in the distant future, others think your Jesus Fark will be saving them shortly and the rest of us deserve what we have coming. Maybe their right. At least there isn't a mountain of scientific evidence stacked up against that idea.
