It's a serious problem but nothing new, and we certainly have some of this element here in the US though nothing as intense. An excellent book on the subject is Bill Buford's bone chilling, "Among the Thugs", an accounting of British soccer thugs written in 1990.Originally posted by Mega View Post
On my first trip to London in 1985 we were eating in a restaurant on the 2nd floor overlooking a theater across the street. We heard a lot of yelling and looked down to see four young men beating another young man in front of the theater, not 10 feet away. While it was brutal and severe, the most amazing thing was the scene inside the theater. Instead of the 100 available men running out to stop it, they were holding the doors closed, two or three to a door to ensure the thugs didn't come in the theater. And when the gang left the victim lay bleeding from his head with no assistance, people walking over and around him as if he didn't exist.

The English have an interesting culture. On one hand it is about high culture, democracy, civil rights, manners, class, breeding and being proper. The other is mean and brutish. One wonders if the obsession about manners isn't to cover up and hold down the nastier elements of a society.GregComment
