  • boo! it's them chinese again

another made at the pentagon moment planted in the foreign press. grab your wallets folks. time to spend some of your hard earned $$$ on the military.

leaving mil chiefs red faced? nah. leaving mil contractors laughing all the way to the bank.
The uninvited guest: Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise, leaving military chiefs red-faced

By MATTHEW HICKLEY 10th November 2007 When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.

At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.

That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

Chinese submarine stalks US carrier: report

    Nov 13 2006
WASHINGTON (AFP) - A Chinese submarine approached a US aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean last month and surfaced within firing range of its torpedoes and missiles before being detected, The Washington Times has reported.
The newspaper said the encounter highlighted China's continuing efforts to prepare for a possible future conflict with the United States despite the administration's efforts to try to boost relations with the Chinese military.
The submarine encounter with the USS Kitty Hawk and its battle group also is an embarrassment to the commander of US forces in the Pacific, Admiral William Fallon, who is engaged in an ambitious military exchange program with China, the report said.

Good god, the Kitty Hawk was an old carrier when I was in the Navy, more than twenty years ago. What a shock seeing this name in the news again.
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye!

This is pretty standard fare for that portion of the British press that is knee-jerk anti-American and sells papers (lots of them) to that island's residents with similar inclinations. This sort of stuff is what they resort to on the rare days when they can't find something that you Americans just did somewhere on the globe to push their papers.

They like to omit a lot too. When the SE Asia tsunami happened the US Navy was out in major force as part of the relief efforts. Some of the British papers refuse to mention it at all. Hell, at the time the coverage in the French press was more complete.

that's a useful insight. thanks. i guess making fun of americans is good for a few laughs and selling a few newspapers.

"why do the british hate us?"

"they envy our way of life."

              ha ha. just kidding.

Close - they envy the teeth.

Also, they have to get even for all the stories of Brit heroes that got turned into movies where the hero's American a US-er or US-ian

That's why I think the "main stream media" is an echo chamber. I just keep hearing the same thing over and over and over again...
