    Re: E-Reader Recommendations?

My recent book, UnCrowned Champions, has over 360 photos and artwork in it. Do you think that would show well in a Kindle? Are pictures in e-book format or in PDF?

I tried FBReader on linux. works OK. I really wanted side-by-side page view on my big monitor and it doesn't seem to do that.

Thanks for this. Ever used Calibre?

            Re: E-Reader Recommendations?

I have an old kindle, a kindle Fire, an iPad2 with the Kindle app, and my Android phone. I also use the kindle app on my computer. There is a browser version as well, so yes, you can use it on Linux (need Firefox, I believe).

My next purchase will likely be the Kindle Paperwhite device for about $120 dollars. The regular kindle is good too, and can be had for $70. These are e-readers only. (http://kindle.vvx.net/ )

I would recommend the Paperwhite because it has a touch screen. My kindle was a bit of a pain to turn pages.

These e-ink readers are far more readable than one of the multimedia devices. However, the Fire is a pretty neat device. Paired with Amazon's $80 dollar per year Prime service, you can basically watch movies and tv shows, read a free book per month, and get free shipping when you buy stuff. It is a pretty good deal if you want to spend the money. But, reading on the kindle is not as nice as the e-ink.

The iPad is tough on my eyes to read for a long time. Maybe the new iPad with its 'retina display' would be easier to read on. It is $500 bucks.

Overall, I'd suggest you get the e-ink device and the Amazon Prime service. You can still watch movies and t.v. on your computer, while you still get the free book per month for your e-ink kindle. Plus, there are the thousands of out of copyright books you can download and read as well.

Kindle and other e-ink displays aren't too good for PDFs, if they have lots of images particularly with colors. A tablet or one of the larger smartphones would be better. But it's easy to get distracted on them and start doing something else.

You can probably get both types of device for under $500. e-ink for longer reading, and tablet for quick reference or graphical material.

To me, anything more than $5 seems ridiculous for an e-book. There's hardly any distribution cost when compared to paper books. (There are 100GB+ torrents floating around on the pirate sites with probably all of the kindle books)

Btw, if you're looking for technical material, Oreilly's safari online library gives you access to their entire collection for around $10/mo, and comes with apps for Android and iOS.I second the Calibre recommendations. It is really excellent software for organizing and converting between ebook formats.

I've now entered the world of electronic gadgetry. Ordered a Kindle Paperwhite. Thanks, guys!
