  • E-Reader Recommendations?

Paperbacks seem to be getting harder and harder to read, what with tinier fonts, cheaper paper and ink, and poor bindings. My eyes aren't what they used to be, so lately I've been buying used hardbacks and oversized paperbacks which aren't very convenient. Maybe it's finally time to buy an e-reader. I have access to WiFi so getting connected is no problem.

Here's what I know so far: Amazon and B&N have the biggest selections of titles. Sony and Kobo have better support for e-pub and the Overdrive library loan system, but they don't have a lot of the titles I want, and if they do they're more expensive. For example, "The Linux Command Line" is available for the Kindle and Nook for about $17.50 and in paperback for $24. But in e-pub format it's $40.

Kindle has the most free books, but there's no way to organize them. Nook books can be be organized in folders. Is this a big deal?

If you have an e-reader, what do you like and dislike about it?

If your computer is running Linux and you have an e-reader, I'm interested in how you move your books back and forth. Are you able to download books to your 'puter via a browser?

I hate spending money on expensive gadgets... don't have a cellphone, i-anything or even a microwave oven, so this is new territory for me. Any recommendations?

    TIA!

Kindle. Hands down IF all you want is an e-reader. Otherwise you might want to consider an iPad or the like.

Kindles are book sized, can hold thousands of books and are currently quite cheap. Many classics (out of copyright) are free for it from Amazon itself.

Kindle readers are available for most computer platforms so your can have your books on them as well.

For me, one of the best features about the Kindle is that it is readable in direct sunlight. Considering I do alot of outside reading, that was a major point.

I will admit having to scroll through the list of Kindle books is a pain, but only a minor one. It keeps the most "read" books at the front of the list -- so I only go through this when I want to start a new book.

    Hope this helps.

That site's amazing! Already downloaded Latin for Beginners. Thanks!

Seems I can download Calibre and use it to organize everything. How did you do it?

New question: Which kindles are you using? The ones with the touchscreen, the keyboard or what?

                    Kindle!

But I'm biased...I used to work for Amazon...so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I use Kindle reader on my tablet.......I'm also reading a ridiculous number of PDFs.

I do have to admit.....that while I am a HUGE fans of real books(usually low volume older niche stuff) I have actually been spending money buying Kindle books.......I have been doing a silly amount of austere travelling where weight/cube is a consideration...so I'm up to about 50/50 split on my book buying between real/electronic.

My wife has the standard Kindle and likes it a lot. I simply use my droid phone for books and I like that better than her kindle. I find it easy to hold and read.

I don't have the latest and greates Kindle, but the one before it with the keyboard.

Under Menu use "Create New Collection" to create a folder.

Then using the square button click the right part of the square to move something in there.

Thanks. I don't think most Kindle users know this is possible. The reviewers don't seem to know about it.
