The thing that's not mentioned in the article is the fact that the document that Rather used was an obvious forgery. The facts were true, corroborated by the people who were there, but someone had put the truth in a false document and hence threw cold water on the whole story. If Karl Rove didn't orchestrate that, it sure fits his MO. Give the message you want to kill to a questionable messenger (or in this case, document) and then attack the integrity of said messenger/document. The entire issue becomes tainted and everyone backs off.
