Woah there, cowboy! I've known several woman who would be open-minded about it, and if you frame the discussion in terms of resale value you might discover an unsuspected deep well of pragmatism.

(Frankly, I'm more concerned that she'll find a house she likes)

2. If they weren't digging for diamonds, what else could they do that would pay as well or better?

1. No. It's the best of a bad set of options.
2. That's where the ethical issues come in. The same system which is reaping the bulk of the profit from the status quo is the one limiting their alternatives.

For some reason, the idea of poor people working for low wages is anathema to most Americans.

I don't think many Americans will object to the *work*. It is the extractive conditions under which they cannot profit from their work that is morally problematic.

Is it better to be unemployed in a peaceful region than to have a job in a war zone? I don't know. I *am* pretty sure that the list of miners that escape poverty is small.
