I think the main problem is welfare mothers and darkies. If we could just restore slavery everything would be all right. And public beheading of gum chewers. And too much sex. Girls wear tight clothes that show too much skin. We need to pass a law requiring the burqa ( even in bed )

look how happy these two girls ( people? ) look! Who wouldn't want to look like that especially on a 90 degree day in Cannes. Perfect for a good tan on the yacht don't you agree?

With rigid control of sex, civil and human rights and every non-slave ( if there are any ) male required to carry an assault rifle at all times the world will be a safer, less stressful place!
Lambs to the slaughter

No really, we shouldn't protect ourselves. We have these guys to rely on instead right?

Yup. As an engineer, I enjoy watching the programs on the military channel about the development of new weapons.

As a civilian, I realize that the right to bear arms will only go so far in protecting the civil society from a powerful gov't that goes astray (as in, not at all).

It's all fantasy land. The average American gun owner is going to die of a heart attack before they get their piece out of the holster, because they are just as out of shape as the average American non-gun owning liberal pantywaist. Most need to work on their cardio before they can worry about holding off any assailants in a gun battle. Meanwhile, the bad guys will be able to escape by using tactics like taking the stairs. Or running up a slight incline.

PS. When visiting Canada, please leave your guns at home. Thanks eh!? :-)

I see the humor in what you're saying but statistical data shows quite the opposite. US citizens use their guns to defend themselves 2.2-2.5 million times a year... 2x-3x more often than guns are used in crimes. In fewer than 1/4 of the cases is a shot fired. Just displaying the weapon is enough to deter most criminals.

More data here: http://www.nraila.org/Issues/articles/read.aspx?ID=125

Re: Buy a GUN!

From "The Armed Citizen" http://www.nraila.org/Issues/articles/read.aspx?ID=125

Doing a search using the keyword "woman" turned up 592 records, among them these little gems:

The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, AZ, 03/08/06
State: az
American Rifleman Issue: 6/1/2006
When a man dressed in black approached a woman on the street, implied he had a gun and demanded cash, she initially tried the passive approach. Police say that although she had a concealed-carry permit and a revolver tucked away, she handed some money over and hoped the robber would leave. But when that didn't work, and fearing her life was in danger, the victim drew her revolver and pointed it at the robber, who ran away. According to a police officer, "She was in fear of her life, and she defended herself appropriately."

NewsChannel5, Cleveland, OH, 03/07/06
State: oh
American Rifleman Issue: 6/1/2006
A 75-year-old grandmother had problems with people trying to break into her home, which is why she bought a small pistol she fondly calls "the peacekeeper." So she was ready when, according to police, two teens came looking for trouble. The burglars could not see the woman, but with the assistance of a mirror, she observed them breaking into her door while she tried to dial 9-1-1. Once inside, the thugs found themselves face-to-face with the woman's pistol, and one look was all it took for them to flee. Police caught up with the suspects after a brief pursuit.

The Fayetteville Observer, Fayetteville, NC, 03/15/06
State: nc
American Rifleman Issue: 6/1/2006
A pregnant woman was lying on the couch in her home when she heard the mini-blinds on her kitchen door rustle. Police say the woman, whose 1- and 3-year-old children were also in the home, got up to investigate and found a man trying to break in. When she spotted him, he ran around the corner of the duplex to the front door and tried to kick it in. The woman warned the prowler that she had a gun. When he replied that he also had a gun, she shot at him and he returned fire. The intruder was hit in the chest and died on the way to the hospital. No one else was injured.

Lynden Tribune, Lynden, Wash., 4/4/07
State: WA
American Rifleman Issue: 7/1/2007
A WOMAN WAS waiting for a bus when three large dogs approached and began lunging at her aggressively. She swung her backpack at them, but they continued their onslaught. That's when Patrick Jones saw what was occurring and stopped his truck. He yelled at the dogs and positioned himself in front of the victim. The woman said the dogs "just wouldn't give up. They kept coming at us ..." Jones, a concealed-carry permit holder, pushed the woman behind him and drew his pistol. When the most aggressive dog lunged up at him, he shot and killed it. "He's a life saver," the woman said of Jones. Lynden Police Chief Jack Foster agreed, saying, "I think he did the lady a big favor to stop and help."

The Daily Item, Sunbury, Pa., 4/2/07
State: PA
American Rifleman Issue: 7/1/2007
Two MASKED MEN apparently thought they could prey on an elderly couple, but Alif "Betty" Feaster-Weeder's quick thinking prevented their offensive. The 75-year-old woman was lying on a couch reading when the men entered the home. One man asked, "Where's your money?" twice before she understood the seriousness of the situation. The woman yelled for her husband, asleep in an adjoining room, to get his gun. The mere suggestion of the firearm sent the intruders running before the husband could respond.

The Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Miss., 3/5/07
State: MS
American Rifleman Issue: 6/1/2007
CASHIER THERESA STUCKEY sold a woman groceries, and the next thing she knew the woman was outside pleading for her life. "She was screaming, 'Help, he's trying to kill me!' She was rolling on the ground, trying to get out of the way, but he kept stabbing her" Terrified onlookers yelled at the man and honked their horns. Ignoring the crowd, the rampaging man poured gasoline on the woman and attempted to set her ablaze, but a passerby entered the scene armed with more than a car horn. According to a witness, the Good Samaritan drew a gun and, "He told the man, 'Stop, or I'm going to shoot! And if you run, I'm going to kill you"' Police say the heroic man held the suspect until they arrived; however, he left before anyone got his name. The victim was listed in good condition at the hospital.

I'm a BIG supporter of the right(in some places like NZ where I live, privilege) to own firearms.

For all firearms owners I support the absolute need to handle and store firearms safely...in NZ it's a requirement.

As far as owning firearms for protection and defensive purposes, even most(in my opinion) Law Enforcement officers are ill prepared to use them effectively.

Most LE gunfight engagement distances are within 6 feet, and most rounds fired still miss.

And that's for folks with some minimum levels of training.

Effectively using firearms under high physical and mental stress can be taught.....but few are actually taught well or enough.

And it's a highly perishable skill.

That's where my concern lies....and that's for civilians AND law enforcement.....for almost everyone...simply not enough training.

Just to be clear, in the USA the public has the "Inalienable Right" to carry firearms, or do what ever they want as long as it does not impact somone elses "pursuit of life, liberty and happiness." The government was never granted the power to control said inalienable right. Politicians have merely usurped this control, while never overtly granted said power.

Kiwis have a very different system of goverment. With all due respect, I'd request that you not confuse the two.

With all due respect in return...I have personal experience in, and understanding of, both environments...US and New Zealand....as well as a considerable amount of operational experience using firearms going after naughty people as well as formally instructing/coaching many in their proper use in a range environment and in simulated high stress close quarters battle environments.

I've posted facts, careful to differentiate when referencing NZ, and my personal informed opinions/concerns.

Please enlighten me as to how I've confused the two as I fail to see it?
