    I thought I heard on the news that it was most likely the result of fireworks.

      Fireworks are new to these areas this year?

      The event happened in at least two states.

      May be benign.

        Yeah, I'm not buying the fireworks explanation either. But do we know if this type of thing is really that unusual or if it's just a case of it being reported and then jumped on by the media as being the "in" story?

          Who knows?

          There is this:

          In 2009 the US Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), part of USDA, says it poisoned 489,444 red-winged blackbirds in Texas and 461,669 in Louisiana. It also shot 4,217 blackbirds in California, 2,246 in North Dakota and 1,063 in Oregon according to its posted records.
