That's a "feature" of the new version of vBulletin forum software to which iTulip converted a few months ago.

If you upload an image to the iTulip servers using the "Attachment" apparatus, then only a thumbnail is shown inline. I suspect that this is an optimization to reduce the network load on the server.

If you link to an image that is served up from some other website, using the <img> HTML code or [IMG ] BB code, then the image is displayed inline in its full glory.

I don't know what that failure means.

I don't know if there are limits on the size or number of uploaded attachments; if there are, I have not yet reached them (I have only uploaded 20 smallish images.)

I suspect that one cannot delete an uploaded attachment that is being linked to from a post. If you click on the '?' question mark in the upper right corner of each displayed attachment on your "Manage Attachments" screen, it seems that you can find the post(s) linking to that attachment. You might see if you can edit one of your old posts that had been linking to an attachment to remove that linkage, and then you might be able to delete that attachment (I'm guessing here.) If you could do that, then see if one of the new image uploads you were attempting now succeeded. This would confirm a 30 file attachment limit. However I hope that there is no such small limit; such a limit would get rather annoying after a while. Sooner or later all iTulip image posters would hit that limit and be unable to upload more images without jumping through flaming hoops. Moreover, if that red exclamation point is indicating that you have hit such a limit, that's a really crappy error message.

I would suspect rather that you're seeing some sort of permissions error in your client PC. Perhaps your browser or file system is setup not to allow that upload. But this is wild speculation on my part. I don't even know if you're running IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, or other, on Windows, Linux or Mac ... not that it would help me much if I did know.

Firefox on XP Pro. (thanks again for the help, Cow) I have no problem posting graphics off the web, just uploads from my PC.

The cure for the new and "improved" vBulletin image upload feature is to upload to a site like http://www.tinypic.com

bracket the url of the image with [ IMG ] http://i52.tinypic.com/1y3bz5.png [/ IMG ] but without the spaces:

              Ed.

I wonder what affect the last option of the Settings -> General Settings screen has on this "improved" image upload feature. That last option reads:

The forum features an enhanced attachment uploading system that allows you to reuse existing attachments via a drag and drop interface.

Depending upon the capabilities of your web browser, you may not be able to use the enhanced system. If you experience problems with the interface, try disabling this option.
Perhaps some users would have better luck choosing the other "Enhanced Attachment Uploading" alternative ("other" meaning opposite whatever setting they have now.)

I'm still shooting in the dark here however, having never witnessed this failure mode myself.
