I've always believed that the early trial runs were Waco and Ruby Ridge. Waco, especially. The media always referred to the compound inhabitants as cultists, never citizens. It's a way of marginalizing people. Can you imagine the public outrage if the reports had said the government had citizens under siege and was burning citizens alive?

But since they were merely cultists, i.e. "crazy-people", most people watched it like a spectator sport. The government learned just how far they could go.

I feel like I'm taking a risk just writing this. When I was a kid, my teachers told our classes how lucky we were to live in the USA, and how bad things were for people in the Soviet Union... with the government controlling every aspect of their lives... spying on their communications... making them show papers when they traveled... Now we've become that way, all purportedly to preserve our country from "enemies" who would threaten our "freedoms". The irony is just too much for me.

We've been frogs in a pot with the heat turned up so slowly... Now I fear it's too late to save ourselves and live free again.
