Sorry, but I've read enough conspiracy ravings about 9-11, and the thorough debunking of said ravings, that I have not one iota of patience with anyone entertaining notions about controlled demolition, radio-controlled planes, Jews being warned not to go to work that day, "nano thermite," & etc. So, anyone, who in the course of a discussion or essay, introduces the notion of the 9-11 attacks being somehow perpetrated by the US government, automatically taints their argument (and reputation), even though the other points they make, may have merit or be demonstrably true.

And so somehow the subject is now taboo?

The congressional testimony that our government now assassinates its own citizens doesn't bother you at all? Don't you don't think people might want to know about something like that...what their government is becoming. This is a fellow who was a professional journalist for decades before his desire to pursue certain stories got him blacklisted from mainstream media.

If the accepted authorities (whomever they be for the people in question) push some particular story hard enough, ignoring or ridiculing conflicting stories, casting out "deniers", then a sizable percentage of us will go along.

We've seen people without this weakness. Well, we've seen one such person. His name was Spock (in Star Trek.)

The rest of us are all susceptible. When in the grip of such an "official storyline", no ordinary amount of logic or evidence or conflicting testimony from experts will have much chance of loosening the grip. Our minds are quite skilled at composing reasons for sticking with the view we have when that view is the "correct" view, when conflicting views are taboo, and when those holding those conflicting views are outcasts.

This is a problem that both we as individuals and those of us who take responsibility for guiding or safeguarding others must always deal with. It is a permanent problem of the human condition, likely a problem of all herding animals (though cows may be too dumb to notice sometimes.)

The only people I know who can consistently break through such a spell are the spell-binding charismatic sorts who essentially can "move a person to a different group", thereby shifting their encompassing group think.

Like most cows, I personally am a tad weak in the charisma department, so the role of spell-binding charismatic leader is not in my repertoire. I have searched and searched for a way to open other peoples minds, in some cases involving long discussions with people of considerable patience, integrity and intelligence. All such efforts have failed totally. I know no way to break through.

Heck, I cannot even recall how I came to change my own mind. I fully accepted the official story on 9/11 and spent much energy for many years enthusiastically supporting George W. Bush, the War on Terror, the Patriot Act and whatever that entailed.

I'll be danged if I can remember now how I came to a different, I believe more accurate, understanding.

Pure rational thinking does not affect emotions (they are two completely different and isolated worlds), that's why you are not successful opening peoples' minds. As any honest man, you don't like to manipulate emotions and hence your lack of "charisma".

Ah yes - I have had the fortune to know one man like this. I am confident that if I had reason to bring some controversial matter such as this to his attention that he had not already considered, then together we could arrive at substantial agreement as to what was the truth.

Thank-you for reminding me of him. He's a special person and it had not occurred to me that there might be any others like him.

He and I have only discussed briefly 9/11 and such, and we were in much agreement, so this example does not test your hypothesis that such conversations can bear fruit. There was an abundance of fruit already ripened on the vine. I am quite inclined to accept your hypothesis anyway.

Sorry, but your extrapolations make no sense to me. Where did I say that I want to "silence" anyone or don't care about our government assassinating citizens? The problem arises when someone making legitimate criticisms of the government destroys any credibility they may have by introducing wack job 9-11 theories. As someone who is skeptical and suspicious of the actions of the government, I find it especially infuriating because combining psychotic conspiracy theories with legitimate criticism leads people to dismiss the legitimate criticism along with the psychotic ravings. If I were inclined to conspiratorial thinking, I might start wondering if this was some type of disinformation campaign.

Exactly, and the people who are convinced that 9-11 was an inside job are operating on pure emotion and have put rational thinking on hold. People and groups who are defined by their pursuit of rationality and empiracism, such as the James Randi Educational Foundation and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (the folks who publish The Skeptical Inquirer), have repeatedly demolished the pseudo-scientific arguments and paranoid delusions of the "Truthers."

Americans borrowed less for a 10th consecutive month in November with total credit and borrowing on credit cards falling by the largest amounts on records going back nearly seven decades. The Federal Reserve said yesterday that total borrowing dropped by $17.5 billion in November, a much bigger decline than the $5 billion decrease economists had expected. November’s $17.5 billion drop in total credit was the biggest amount in dollars terms since records began in 1943. That represents an 8.5 percent fall from the October borrowing level. That was the biggest percentage drop since total credit declined 9 percent in May 1980. The borrowing category that includes credit cards fell by $13.7 billion, an all-time record decline in dollar terms. Sorry, but your extrapolations make no sense to me. Where did I say that I want to "silence" anyone or don't care about our government assassinating citizens? The problem arises when someone making legitimate criticisms of the government destroys any credibility they may have by introducing wack job 9-11 theories. As someone who is skeptical and suspicious of the actions of the government, I find it especially infuriating because combining psychotic conspiracy theories with legitimate criticism leads people to dismiss the legitimate criticism along with the psychotic ravings. If I were inclined to conspiratorial thinking, I might start wondering if this was some type of disinformation campaign.

I thought you implied main street media was right to ostracize him for wanting to talk about the possibility of a false flag. If this is not the case I apologize for the misunderstanding.

I personally don't think we should censor anyone for ideas that lack merit. I prefer to make up my own mind. I would argue that it is better to let bad ideas burn themselves out otherwise you give them false life by virtue of suppression.

Being convinced of something is an emotion, the emotion of being convinced.

There must be a better way to say this. As you can see from Master Shake's response above, the word "emotion" makes it all too easy for readers to dismiss your insight.

My sense is that what I usually call "emotion" is distinct from the "generally accepted notions" that I unconsciously assume as true (due to my natural herding instincts.)

I suspect that the psycho-dynamic structure of the mind has more elements in a more complex structure than just "emotion" vs "rational thought." I associate emotions with the middle brain; cats and up have emotions, though they don't herd so well. Concepts of generally accepted truth, private doubts thereof, ones inner "self" dialogue, empathy for what others are feeling, shame and guilt, ... these are require various part of the higher brain.

(Granted, testing any such theory for correctness by the criteria of whether Master Shake agrees is a poor test .)
