    why do i... a subscriber... have to look at ads anyhow?

    Firefox + Ad-Block Plus = No Advertisements.

        I have a hard time understanding why paying subscribers should see ads at all in the first place.

          I personally tune out ads; they don't bother me unless they slow down my viewing rate (like on Hulu)

              Another option is to put the addresses of all the adware sites from which you never want to load another page into your hosts file. See further Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File. It's free and works for all browsers on all modern operating systems. It's not perfect; do read the associated FAQS, but it's pretty close.
