  • Joining the Air Force

With everything as bad as it is and feeling trapped, I decided to join the Air Force. Heading to MEPS tomorrow!

I guess they were right. People will only have two choices: waiting in line for food or being in the military.

    Not to worry...

I joined the US Army way back in August of 1978, probably before you were even born. I've only regretted it a few times. LOL

I'm in the process of re-entering the Active Navy Reserve. I have over 28 'good' years. No matter what happens to politics, the dollar, the stock market, the 'economy', the military personnel will continue to defend the Constitution of the United States. You will be among the elite, my friend. We military people go way back, since before the Revolution. Remember that always. Many are those who complain and protest. Those of us who have made the commitment to put our Constitution first are members of an elite and we will always stand together. Welcome!!

Good luck. Just don't volunteer for anything.

I would be quite happy if they started plundering the countries we occupy.

Bullshit, justify it however you want. You've got a hell of a lot of options outside the military industrial complex.

                Enjoy!

Thank you all for the replies.

I just returned from MEPS. I was unable to finish the urine test, but I will on Monday.

I scored a 93 on the AFQT and 90+ on all my line scores.

Not bad. That should allow you to pick your career field. Keep in mind that the most technically-demanding might not be the most exciting, but will be much more likely to pay huge dividends later when you retire and become an overcompensated retiree/contractor. Assuming you stay in...

Since you decided to join the Air Force, you have a substantial chance of being deployed in the sands, so be prepared for that.

As for tombat1913's video, DU is handled with great care, at least in the Navy. Then again, the Navy routinely deals with substantially hazardous material, so it might still be very different for the other branches.

What if they gave a war and nobody came?

I wasn't aware it was that difficult. Do you have to start over on Monday or will they let you pick up from where you left off.

I don't care about how the DU is handled in the Navy, the point is that he's signing up to be expendable cannon fodder, no matter the branch. The other point is that there are many other options outside participating in militaristic imperialism.

While I can stretch to see your imperialistic blindered viewpoint, it's worth mentioning millions of Americans(and new Americans) have served with honor, pride, and distinction.

It's also worth mentioning the significant technical, leadership, life experience, and people management skills acquired while in service to ones country.

I fail to see how the US Coast Guard providing littoral border security and rendering assistance to those in need, much like the US Air Force's Pararescue and Search & Rescue capabilities, just two examples, should be shunned as imperialistic.

I would strongly encourage you to get out more and talk to some folks in uniform........if you can actually be open minded about it, you might be surprised at what you learn about them.

                            Good luck BadJuju!

While I'm just a dumb grunt in a different Army, a couple very close friends of mine are ex USAF......they spent a good few years in uniform when job prospects were tough in the late 70's, early 80's. They got to do some very, very cool stuff in West Germany, had a blast, made friends for life, and acquired some skill sets that provided the basis for their continued and current success in the telecom industry...and they were "just" enlisted.

Don't listen to those pissing in the punch bowl......

I will say the same thing to you as I do to all the people I see in uniform
any time I am in an airport:

"Thank you sir for your service!"
