Re: Tea Party Protests in DC video

I decided to post this probably widely circulating email for a few reasons:

    1. the number of attendees seems much larger than commonly reported
    2. the attendees as pictured in what looks like somebody's "photo album", are much more representative of mainstream US and less of right wing-nuts
    3. these people are not going to stop and will throw the next election strongly to the right, and we will all live with the consequences.
    4. in the meantime nothing will get done in the next year before the campaigns and the democratic majority is lost, and less will get done after that. Honeymoon over. It would appear that our president is an inspiration more to the opposition than to his support.

    email follows: -----------------------------

Notice that these pictures are from a UK newspaper. Their estimate of the crowd size is far larger than that of US news sources.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1213056/Up-million-march-US-Capitol-protest-Obamas-spending-tea-party-demonstration.html?ITO90 ),

This is the first great conservative anti-statist manifestation in American history. The conservative movement, which developed in the post-WWII, Cold War environment has now fully matured into the most significant political movement of the 21st century. I believe that this day could be referred to in the not too distant future as the day that changed America . This was the day the great silent conservative majority finally found its voice.

Many of the attendees were quite meek and timid and were unsure of exactly what to expect, this being the first time in their lives they’d been involved in a protest movement. Their fears evaporated early in the day and I saw people reveling in the camaraderie , the joy and sheer civility that was exhibited at the entire event. Chants of “Freedom, freedom, freedom”, “No more czars! No more czars!” carried through the air without the slightest hint of rancor or incivility which is the norm at the leftist rallies I have photographed over the years.

The two photos above show a tiny fraction of the two million ABC estimates attended. I saw signs and heard lots of comments comparing this event to Woodstock . At the time this photo was taken, around 1:00 p.m., Pennsylvania Avenue was still jammed completely, and the mall was packed from the Capitol Building past the Washington Monument . See aerial photos here.

Protesters came from every state in the union. This man came from San Antonio , TX . He said that he was really sorry he hadn’t brought his family. He stated that being a black conservative he was afraid to expose his children to what he expected would be a lot of liberal abuse. He was thrilled with the tenor of the event and the fact that no liberals were present to harass him. He spoke about how incredibly intolerant the left is to black individuals who don’t bow to the party line.

These Ohioans took a day off their rodeo bullriding schedule. They said they’ll be back at it tomorrow.

Mike Pence (R-Indiana) was one of the speakers who addressed the crowd: “After years of fighting runaway government on this hill, you people look like the cavalry to me..I believe we are on the verge of a great American awakening.”

San Diego radio host Mason Weaver said from the podium: “I came here because I thought you might want to hear a black man speak without a teleprompter…This government is trying to make a nation of dependent people. Americans have always been independent people…This is not a Republican thing, it’s not a Democrat thing. It’s not a black thing or a white thing. It’s an American thing…We the people are telling them ‘No more! We’ve had enough!”

In the very center of the photo, above the Silence is Consent – Can You Hear Us Now sign, you can see Pennsylvania Ave. , which at this time is totally blocked with protesters who cannot move forward to the Capitol area.. Sorry, full up.

There were notable differences though, in the behavior of these attendees. Although the legend of Woodstock is that there was a friendly atmosphere of camaraderie, the truth is that most people were there for the drugs, sex and rock and roll. Today in D.C. there was a true kinship amongst these people based on shared values and intellectual understanding of what America is and how its future is imperiled by big radical government.

No one was having sex in the Reflecting Pool let alone the mud, and I saw no one projectile vomiting on the steps of the Capitol. There were no warnings to avoid the bad acid which would send you on a trip to the hospital. Not just a different era, but a different level of civilized behavior and thought. Oh, and by the way, these people didn’t leave tons of garbage behind when they left. Actually they left no trash behind at all.

Nancy Pelosi has accused patriotic tea-partyers of “carrying swastikas” implying that they are Nazi sympathizers. This event was wall to wall hammers and sickles and words like “socialist” “communist” and “Marxist” etc. It continues to fascinate me how long the Democrats will tolerate this without ever commenting on it. Either they like it, or there’s something to it.

Ever present at Tea Parties are Sons of Liberty reenactors.. The couple on the left is from Tennessee and the young lady on the right is not but she joined in the photo. The clothing for the couple was hand stitched by the lady on the left.

Re: Tea Party Protests in DC video

I'd love to see a Conservative government take complete power in the United States. But it would most likely include less than fifty members of the present Congress, and other than Ron Paul or John Duncan I don't know who would fit the bill as President.

Thanks to the Bushes and the many useless Repukelicans in the present Congress, most people in this country don't know what Conservatism is. It stands for the maintenance of sound money (contract money - NOT fiat), non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries (no empire) and limited government expressed through the doctrine of Subsidiarity. While it does see the need for regulation of interstate commerce, banks, pharmaceuticals, etc., it doesn't see the commerce clause as a conduit through which the Federal government can take over all aspects of American life. It has a fundamental disagreement with subsidies, including those to farmers, bailouts for ANYONE, the maintenance of a large military, and social engineering by way of the tax code. And it sees an activist judiciary that usurps the legislative function as a threat to our republic.

I'm flexible to a very limited extent, but I stand by these basics, without apology.

While I oppose democracy, the condescension of your post is rather startling.

I would despair if I held your views. Those who advocate the nanny state are typically rather weak and would stand little chance in the event of an armed insurrection.

There are few things of which I am certain, and one of them is people do not die for free healthcare. They will however die for freedom.

One major defining factor of Fascist ideology is a corporatist economic policy, in which there is a merger between state and corporation. So the fascist thing isn't far off at all. The authoritarian social ideologies aren't far off either.

Some of these tea party protesters were complaining that the public transportation was not adequate. The irony. It burns.

I am fully opposed to all of the bailouts (TARP, auto, McMansion) being orchestrated by the government, and I believe Obama has got it terribly wrong on the economy (as did Bush BTW).

However most of the protestors seem to be protesting the administration's attempts to provide some form of universal healthcare that doesn't lead to automatic bankruptcy if you're not covered by a generous large-employer backed plan.

They are protesting the wrong policies.

They also appear to forget that the Republicans were not so fiscally conservative when they held the balance of power. The repubs. miraculously discovered fiscal conservatism just when some of the government's largesse might actually benefit poor and middle class folk (like themselves) in the form of healthcare.

I have no problem with conservatives, and I consider myself fiscally conservative. However I find neither political party to be fiscally conservative, and of the two main parties the republicans are so obviously a party that prides itself on holding down the little guy while the corporations screw them. So these protestors should be careful what they wish for when they wish for Obama to be ousted.

Finally, there is nothing fiscally conservative about the current healthcare system, which is run by, and for the benefit of the same Wall St oligarchs that have taken the government hostage.

Re: Tea Party Protests in DC video

Here is some stunning news (end sarcasm):

A local leader of the 9/12 Tea Party movement in Colorado only started paying attention at all to politics after TARP and Glenn Beck is his only source of information.

Like myself and others have pointed out elsewhere, it isn't a coincidence that most of these people didn't play a positive role in the Ron Paul campaign. This new movement, despite allegedly being non-partisan and all about big government, only appeared after January 4th.

We will only know how many of these regular people are not partisan hypocrites after the GOP is back in control of the Congress and/or the White House.

After a couple weeks quietly attending 9-12 meetings and events, I decided I needed to speak directly with Rodgers. Reached by telephone in late August, Rodgers hesitates after learning I write for the Independent, but he remains courteous during a short conversation.

He still seems to be grappling with what it means to be an activist. "Pretty much, politics was in the background," he says, before he became active with the 9-12 movement.

"What shocked me was TARP," he says, referring to the Troubled Asset Relief Program, pushed by the Bush administration, which passed in October 2008 to rescue banks and financial firms from the bad loans they issued and traded. "That's what got me interested."

He started watching Glenn Beck's show, and got involved after Beck unveiled the 9-12 Project in March.

"He's saying some things that are a little shocking," Rodgers says. "He's hit a note with a lot of folks."

So ... if they just started their involvement, they are likely partisan hypocrites? I suppose on the other hand, if they have been involved for a long time, they are dyed in the wool partisan hacks.

Ah - I see the logic. It's the other side that is always too partisan .

A bit partisan perhaps, but also quite amusing, and I think contains a central message (get in shape America !) that most here would agree with :
