So,
140 banks closed by the FDIC this year -- seven of them today. I doubt any will be closed next Friday on Christmas, or on the following Friday, which is New Year's day. So 140 may be the final total for the year.
Some perspective.
140 banks were closed in 2009.
26 in 2008.
2 in 2007.
0 in 2006.
0 in 2005.
4 in 2004.
3 in 2003.
11 in 2002.
4 in 2001.
2 in 2000.
-- so 140 closed in 2009, 52 total in the 9 years before that.
In 2009, of the 140 closed:
25 were in Georgia.
21 in Illinois.
17 in California.
14 in Florida.
-- that's 80 of the 140 (57%) in just 4 states. No other state was in double digits; the next-highest was Minnesota, with 6 closed banks. Texas and Arizona each had 5.
Fasten your seatbelts. EJ's call is for a total of around 1000 banks to be closed by I believe the end of 2010. That would mean about 700-800 banks closed next year -- or about 6 times the number in 2009.Comment
