Re: Mexico shuts schools, museums to stop flu outbreak

thought I could cut and paste but can't seem to, anyway, opening of chpt 15 of naomi Klein's shock doctrine describes Glead Sciences as former company of Donald Rumsfeld and patent owner of Tamiflu used to treat avian flu. Doesn't go into any more details as to Donalds holdings but nice and suspicious nonetheless.

will try to check out links. I've started uni again and am way too busy at moment unfortunately

What has me wandering the most, is that this is the strongest response to a possible pandemic the government of this country has set up in my entire life. Not even after the explosions in Ixhuatepec and Guadalajara, not after the 8.1 earthquake of 1985, has been an open government plan like this. People here, that tend to think governemnt minimizes things, think this is really huge... Yep, we are really panicked.

Ocelotl - I live five miles from the highest traffic Mexico - US border crossing that exists. Can you please keep us informed in this thread with any updates on any news you may receive locally? Thanks. And best wishes to the residents of Mexico City (and New York!) that this occurrence is well managed. Of course, airplanes are the single most critical vector for carrying a local virus internationally.

As someone who lives on the gulf coast and regularly deals with human panic syndrome on a localized scale during hurricane season, this has all ways been something I have feared. However maybe this fellow is right and all the planning that has been done will pay off. http://foxforum.blogs.foxnews.com/20...-fear-not-flu/
            Let's hope so.

New York City Department of Health announces unscheduled news conference regarding Swine Flu

                http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/...100184668.html

New York, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – The New York City Health Department says it will be holding an unscheduled news conference later on Saturday, officials tell BNO News.

The department sent out a media alert to the news media just before 1 p.m. Eastern time, saying that Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas R. Frieden will give an update “on the status of influenza in New York City.” It was initially scheduled for 3 p.m. but officials later said the briefing was being postponed until 4 p.m. Eastern time.

A spokeswoman for the department, in a call with BNO News, refused to provide any more information on the briefing. “I can’t give any information other than what was stated on the media advisory,” she said. A press release was also scheduled to be released later on Saturday.

But I am not sure how that, or better border controls, is going to stop the virus migrating north carried by anyone who's vacationing down there...
Well, there used to be this thing called "Quarantine" but I'm sure the AC to hell with U would have conniptions if we tried to actually used standard public health measures. We couldn't even do standard contact tracing with AIDS because of gay activists.

Re: Mexico shuts schools, museums to stop flu outbreak

And thanks to the Wright Brothers' wonderful invention, containing this is likely to be almost impossible:
A member of cabin crew was taken to hospital with "flu-like symptoms" today after falling ill on a British Airways flight from Mexico City to Heathrow.
The World Health Organisation has warned countries to be on alert for any unusual flu outbreaks after a swine flu virus was implicated in possibly dozens of human deaths in Mexico.
The BA employee, who has not been named, has been taken to Northwick Park hospital in Harrow, a hospital spokesman said.
He added: "He has flu-like symptoms and is responding well to treatment. The patient was admitted directly to a side room and the hospital is scrupulously following infection control procedures to ensure there is no risk to any other individual in the hospital."
The man was taken from flight BA242 which landed at 2pm today, a BA spokesman said.
From the Guardian. And given that a whole bunch of other folks were cooped up with him for quite a few hours, this is probably too little, too late. Should've quarantined the entire plane, of course, but no surprise that this wasn't done.

Yeah, we have it here where I live.

I got this in an high priority email at work.

"A variant of the H1N1 Swine Influenza was found in two non-related teenage
military dependent children. The teenagers were treated by the Randolph
Medical Clinic after experiencing flu-like symptoms and have made a full
recovery. The tests were confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. A third suspected case has yet to be confirmed. This is not
expected to be a pandemic; however national media attention has occurred
through various sources such as CNN and FOX news. 12th Flying Training Wing
Public Affairs has not issued a statement and is in a responsive mode only."

Time to activate project "wildfire" (10 bucks on who gets the reference without google).

Actually, I worked on a documentary on avian flu for IBM.

                          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd2nD7u2mN8

The dailies were scarier than the film. Some very smart people made me go buy some Tamiflu. I think instant communication and some smart thinking will keep this from turning into a pandemic. But just because we have gotten better at keeping these things at bay is no reason to mock them.

Mexico is a semi-failed state with a new flu. Pakistan is nuclear and falling apart. A failed state in Somalia leads to pirates chasing people around it's waters. These are portents and signs of trouble. Just because civilization has held together relatively nicely is no reason to assume anything less than diligence will keep it together. Think Katrina and Superdome. What would make the world an "every man for himself" world.

San Diego Union Tribune today mentioned "several people in San Diego County" who have already contracted it, and health authorities in the county stating already they expect that number to rise. We've got hybrid flu virus in So Cal already.

Baby, can you dig your man?
