What if you are ""deemed" to be an asymptomatic carrier?

        Stephen King's The Stand

My wife has a signed copy.

One of his best books, about a battle between good and evil after a flu pandemic wipes out 99% of the population.

Paddy, Nitroglycol - that was the fictional version. Seems we've been pushed brusquely into the real jig now. We've already given Tom Clancy a chance to see his fictional mega terror scenarios unfold. What is it now, time for Stephen King's dark visions too?

My kids and I were sick with a flu like virus a couple of weeks ago. A whole bunch of people in New York had it. The doctors said it couldn't be the flu this late. We were very sick. Was this strain already going around and no one noticed until now?

This is why you we don't have pandemics.

The first case was seen in Mexico on April 13. The outbreak coincided with the President Barack Obama’s trip to Mexico City on April 16. Obama was received at Mexico’s anthropology museum in Mexico City by Felipe Solis, a distinguished archeologist who died the following day from symptoms similar to flu, Reforma newspaper reported. The newspaper didn’t confirm if Solis had swine flu or not.

Yeah, my whole family got that as well. About a month ago. It was pretty bad. Swept through all our friends as well. Nobody died, though.

First thing that popped into my head when I read about it. Here is the solution to starvation and peak oil.

I am starting to think that this virus has been going around for a month or so. Why the alert in Mexico? My conspiracy theory is this virus is being trumped up to pass through some emergency legislation, some special powers. Drug cartel emergency! Flu emergency! What is the agenda?

                              Maybe in NYC now.

Re: Mexico shuts schools, museums to stop flu outbreak

Now that you mention it, I had a nasty flu-like illness a week or two back as well.

Some reassuring news -- the suspected case in the UK is a false alarm. On the other hand, some possible cases in New Zealand and Israel, so we may not be out of the woods yet.

Incidentally, this article makes an interesting point:
A big question is: Just how deadly is the virus in Mexico? The seasonal flu tends to kill just a fraction of 1 percent of those infected.
In Mexico, about 70 deaths out of roughly 1,000 cases represents a fatality rate of about 7 percent. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19, which killed an estimated 50 million worldwide, had a fatality rate of about 2.5 percent.
The Mexican rate sounds terrifying. But it’s possible that far more than 1,000 people have been infected with the virus and that many had few if any symptoms, said Dr. Michael Osterholm, a prominent pandemic expert at the University of Minnesota. U.S. health officials echoed him.
“In Mexico, they were looking for severe diseases and they found some. They may not have been looking as widely for the milder cases,” said Schuchat of the CDC.
So maybe we've been freaking out for no reason. Oh well, wouldn't be the first time I've done that. Maybe it's all the books I've read (The Stand of course, but also The Last Canadian, Earth Abides, etc).
