With wind and solar he has his own energy system designed around his particular energy usage and needs. Plus he got a buy on the property because it was "undesirable" since it had no power line into it.

With such a small scale power system, one could then design a house to meld with that system rather than the traditional houses we have now with their cumbersome and costly wiring systems.
Currently the most cost effective technologies require connection to the grid. Off-grid systems work very well but they're more expense and more complex to install and maintain.

Much of the additional cost associated with off-grid renewable energy systems is related to the fact that there are no utility/state based incentives available for off-grid systems like there are for grid connected systems.

      - Suggest to your family and friends that they do the same. Help them understand what that means.

      - Be as self sufficient in your life as you can be. For me that was:
      • Move out of a large city
      • Sell the cars and consumer stuff with monthly payments
      • Live and work within walking distance
      • Be aggressive in buying locally to support your community
      • Work with your local government to encourage them to live within their means
      • Support local energy projects
      • Speak regularly to various groups about ways to support the above.
For my family, that started over 12 years ago and it's been a process. For example, I used to commute an average of 200 miles a day in an SUV in Los Angeles. Now I commute 2.5 miles a day on a bike unless the weather is bad. That was a gradual change.

I'm not so interested in changing government at the national level. I think it starts with your local government and you should live somewhere where you can effect change. Everyone will have their own way of making changes and encouraging change in others but this way works for me.
      Support local energy projects???????????????????????????

Yes, I support windmills in Wyoming where the wind blows day and night at hurricane velocity, but I can NOT support building windmills in California and calling that an energy plan. Yes, I support solar energy in Riyad, Saudi Arabia or Elot, Isreal or Cairo, Egypt or Yuma, Arizona, but I can NOT support solar energy projects elsewhere. And even in the dryest of deserts, solar energy is at best, a supplement to conventional power.

Contrast these pot-head solutions to energy with a real solution to energy: atomic power. One large atomic power plant provides power for 750,000 homes.

It stands to reason, that the cost of energy drops when the amount of energy produced becomes large. So, the cheapest power is atomic energy. No wonder France now produces 87% of its power by atomic energy.

Supporting local energy projects sounds real touchy-feeeeeeeeeeeely. But that is not a solution to the cost of energy--- no matter how many carbon credits and special subsidies and special incentives you want to waste with such nonsense.

Our electric rates in British Columbia are now climbing to 13cents per kwh thanks to touchy-feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeely solutions to the cost of power. A power bill for a large family in one home will be about $200 per month in B.C, thanks to pot-head solutions to energy production.

And the real solution to energy production, atomic power, means not putzing-around with environmental impact statements, E.P.A delays, law-suits from the Sierra Club, and protesters when building power plants. It means building the largest power plants possible, as quickly as possible; start-to-finish, constructing a power plant should take five years maximum.

That DHS report was probably the most inflammatory and condescending report I've ever read. Holy Christ but the folks in that agency are assholes.
I am a potential terrorist and an "extremist" because I oppose turning 20 million illegal aliens into US citizens?
Or, because I believe in state's rights? Or, I believe that I have the right to own a gun? Or, because I "percieve" that the US has trampled on my civil rights and don't like that? What are those guys smoking over there at DHS? Things are definitely taking a turn for the worse here in the US.

Hey, itulip as a "pre-existing social network", ever hear of VIRAL MARKETING?:

The buzzwords viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet.[1] Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or even text messages. The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable.

The goal of marketers interested in creating successful viral marketing programs is to identify individuals with high Social Networking Potential (SNP) and create Viral Messages that appeal to this segment of the population and have a high probability of being passed along.

The term "viral marketing" has also been used pejoratively to refer to stealth marketing campaigns—the unscrupulous use of astroturfing on-line combined with undermarket advertising in shopping centers to create the impression of spontaneous word of mouth enthusiasm.[2]

Personally, I think there is some constant and serious shilling going on here for the NUKESTERS.

Re-read what I wrote. Texas is a net contributor. That means they give more than they receive. In 2005, for example, they received $0.96 for every dollar they sent to DC.

And you're statement about job creation doesn't take into account jobs that are lost because money collected in taxes is money that can't be spent on jobs. In effect, DC is reallocating jobs -- taxes eliminate jobs that would have been used in the private sector and redirecting them to government projects.

And because Texas gives more than it receives, jobs are probably being created outside Texas with Texas' money.

My neighbour in back of me has an estate. He lives above my house on a very exposed hill without trees at the summit where his solar energy system is--- as perfect as one could get for solar power here on Vancouver Island. He installed a huge solar power system to go off of the grid and live independently, at least in summer.

His house in summer does not have enough energy from his solar power unit to power anything. His thousands invested in solar power turned-out to be a joke.

However, I am very impressed by wood-stoves as a source of home heating. This pot-head solution does work well---- provided that you are willing to get up all night-long and carry 30 pound cut-logs to your stove.

And wood burning does make a nice fire-light at night, so my log home is very cozy and warm. Very Canadian, indeed! My carbon foot-print however is bigger than any oil refinery's carbon foot-print, but I won't get into that discussion here.

My cabin and acreage used to be part of a marijuana grow-op. What would you expect from a pot-head grow-operation? I was very naive to have ever bought it, but I didn't know anything about grow-ops here in BC. This place even came with rats as big as cats.... But now the log cabin is ship-shape, and I am very proud of it. This is my retirement home near Victoria, BC.

Since you pot-heads put-in the Govn't of Gordon Campbell and the B.C. Liberals here in British Columbia so that you could have your pot farms, and since your touchy-feeeeeeeeeeeely "neighbour power solutions" have driven electric rates up this province to now 13cents per kwh, could I now send you my electric bill???????????????

You pay. Why should I have to pay these outrageous power rates so that you can putz-around with solar energy and wind and tidal and non-solutions like that?

You eco-frauds here are on the West Coast are actually more selfish and arrogant than the Bush Republicans in the USA. And you are more dangerous.

Shall we discuss the twenty-six people shot during March in Vancouver, BC thanks to your damn pot-trade????????? Vancouver used to be a city where you could go out and bicycle and walk.... No-one had guns before. No-one knew what Hell's Angels were, at least not before.

13cents for a kilowatt-hour for electricity because you wanted a freeze in electric power plant construction. You didn't want hydro-electric dams nor natural gas-fired power plants. You didn't want coal dug at Nanaimo, BC to provide fuel for coal-fired power plants. You didn't want nuclear power............ YOU PAY MY ELECTRIC BILL !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm 100% pro alt-energy but in strict terms Starving Steve is 100% correct. With a flat out implementation of alt-energy according to even the rose tinted estimates of the IEA, the total sum of alt-energy implemented worldwide by 2020 won't exceed a few percentage points. Therefore what he points out, even though in typical cranky SS fashion, is strictly speaking quite true.

Fair disclosure. I have inadvertently tried a reefer on one or two occasions (someone passed it to me and didn't tell me it wasn't a cigarette) but I course never inhaled!

All complaints regarding suffix usage should be referred to the Department of Suffix Usage and Licensing, a division of the Department of Homeland Sockchecking. I believe the fee for a complete Suffix License search is $200. I can give you a referrral to a Suffix License Lawyer, he's pretty good---already done quite a bit of work for me. Behind on his house payments, so very cheap.

The Congressional Sub-Committee on Suffix Usage, Licensing and Reform will be holding month long hearings commencing May 5, 2009. Contact your local Congressperson for more details and to make arrangements to be heard at these all important hearings which may well determine the future of the Suffix in America.

There is no getting around the scale economy of power generation--- or anything else. Therefore, the larger the power plant, the cheaper the power. Therefore, centralized power production is cheaper than neighbourhood power production.

The cheapest power, by far, is large scale atomic power. One power plant can provide enough power for 750,000 homes. Compare this to small-scale neighbourhood solar power or neighbourhood wind power which in most locations does not provide enough power to meet the needs of even one (1) house.

Naturally, a forest of windmills or an entire square mile of solar panels would yield better results than a small neighbourhood solution of wind or solar. But again, there is the issue of what happens when the wind doesn't blow or what happens when the sun doesn't shine; how is power going to be provided twenty-four hours per day, reliably all year long?

Finally, as the world stays with centralized power solutions and develops atomic power, the citizenry has to insist upon limits to what can be charged by the power-providers for power. In other words, we all give up the right to develop our own neighbourhood alternative power, and in exchange, we get the benefit of the scale economy of power provided from one central source.
