  • Top Ten Reasons US Is A Banana Republic

    Here's # 1:

    1. The People Don’t Know and Don’t Care to Know. The American people are quite aware of Malawian Adoption Law, can cite the California statutes on artificial insemination, and know Octomom’s middle name, but can’t or won’t listen to one word about who controls their institutions, nor can they find William Black on any other media outlet other than the Web or Bill Moyers. [my bold] We have the former Chief Fraud Investigator screaming SHAM, SWINDLE, HEIST and we just sit there glassy-eyed, wondering if the blind guy was given a fair shot on Idol. No hour slot on Larry King, no lead story on 60 minutes, not even 5 minutes on The Daily Show, which is arguably the best financial and investigative journalist show on television.

My friends and dear readers, this is your representative republic. This is the product of your popular sovereignty. This is your AMERICA.

And pirates. I would add pirates. They are VERY BIG right now. Americans KNOW PIRATES while not knowing shit about pirates at all. (I posted some typical comments on the Somali thread but didn't arouse a response to this phenomenon )

Now, it is SUSAN BOYLE. The media hype on this one is so heavy, I even know who this CELEBRITY is. The Public fell for this one hook, line and stinker. Patently, a smooth PR job by the media spin guys. America Depresses while they listen to dumpy housefrau warble a tune.

seriously, the most obvious explanation to me is that capitalism logically leads to oligarchy and the various myriad controls these guys can concoct to maintain what they gain. No one seems willing to honestly look at the problem from this angle.

                    Same here.
I heard about her on the morning radio alarm clock yesterday. You tubed her that evening. Looked at Simon Cowell's "Paul Potts" the second marketing ploy (yes, I fell for the first one as being genuine, fool me once etc.) and thought "Jesus, how can they carry on with that gimmick until the public sees through the sham". Scroll down the youtube comments and realise that they will be able to pull this scam off forever.

Fair play to Cowell though. The formula works, he found it and now he is creaming it. Well done.

What's next though? If only Cowell could find a blind, wheelchaired, ugly, fat, minority person who can sing like a semi-pro. Then he has it really made. He could always trawl the auditions for musicals/opera and then make them up as an invalid and give them a fake sob story. Oh wait, maybe that's what he has already done...

On a positive note, if this woman Susan really hadn't devoped her career at all and was a talent not spotted before, then fair play to Simon for giving someone a chance.

I've heard an opera music student singer (lat year in a 7 year music training) sound 10 tens better than Susan though at small town local concert appearances for local choir groups. Made half the audience cry. She was dumpy and fat too. Now Simon, there's a thought...

SUSAN BOYLE has now been taken to the next, predictable, level. A makeover. Hair, dyes, eyebrows.

Yes, why do I know this. I peeked into the local paper, a garrison town rag that does wonders with its headline compositions of AP boilerplate.

So now we're polarized yet again. Should or shouldn't she have had the makeover. Questions, questions questions. Do I answer straight from the heart... or go all academic-ie and reason out my response.

                      Oh, the HORROR :eek::eek:

Frankly I am enjoying the Susan Boyle "15 minutes of fame". It's a nice change to have something else to read on the covers of the tabloids racked up at the supermarket checkout to relieve the boredom while waiting in line to pay for the bread and carrots...something other than yet another round of Britney, Paris or Lindsay.

[And those three alone qualify as three good indicators the USA is headed for banana republic status...]

You mean they are coming back?

I bet people in Minnesota wish they were living in a Banana Republic during the winter.

But maybe I played too many computer games in my past

                          Tropico 3

Tropico 3 is an upcoming summer 2009 politics and city building video game developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media and it is a sequel to Tropico. The game will return to the roots of the series, putting the player into the shoes of "El Presidente" - a dictator governing over an island banana republic. Staying true to spirit of Tropico, the new game will be a construction and management simulation with heavy emphasis on city building. Tropico 3 is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2009.

This game actually sounds like a lot of fun! "So long as I'm the dictator"

Warren Buffet was commenting on the US debt in an article. It seems he thought it still could double, before the US reached banana levels. It don't seems that the US will face the same downgrade that is threatening the UK, and have already hit Ireland.
