Yep. Goldman profits "surged" - which of course justify increased compensation.

Goldman Sachs had a $1.41 billion net loss from principal investments, including a $151 million loss from the firm’s investment in Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd.

The bank set aside $4.71 billion to pay compensation and benefits, 18 percent more than the first quarter a year earlier. The expense totaled 50 percent of revenue, up from 48 percent in the first quarter last year. The number of employees, which fell 7 percent during the quarter to 27,989, is 12 percent lower than the first quarter of last year.

                      Got it.

But, by comparison, I'll bet he's still way in check.

With this surprise announcement GS has beaten WS expectations by about $700MM and they reportedly want to pay back their $10B in TARP funds and free themselves of this government yoke. I would agree, let them go off to be the best-of-the-best entrepreneurs they see themselves as...as soon as they pay back the $13B in TARP funds they've received as a counter party to AIG.

jtabeb fairly well captured most everyone's sentiment with regard to these bankers. It must be nice to announce $2 per share in additional earnings as a surprise when US taxpayers have given you $28 a share through your bankrupt insurer.

After they give back their $10B in TARP, they'll still be $3B ahead. That should keep the charade going for at least a few more quarters. It's got to be great to have your ex-CEO at the Treasury helm when these structural decisions are being made.

And, in case I haven't gone back in history far enough to get you riled up, all of this was kicked off by the failure of Goldman competitor Lehman Bros. So Paulson lets the competitor fail then lights his hair on fire asking for billions and billions and billions, saving his ex firm.

                        ...what jtabeb said.

Remember the big "earnings" surprise with Wells Fargo a few days ago? The media was singing about how things were all better now that the banks were profitable again, etc.

                            Now we have this:

                            http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...efer=worldwide

Wells Fargo May Need $50 Billion in Capital

Wells Fargo & Co., the second- biggest U.S. home lender, may need $50 billion to pay back the federal government and cover loan losses as the economic slump deepens, according to KBW Inc.’s Frederick Cannon.

KBW expects $120 billion of “stress” losses at Wells Fargo, assuming the recession continues through the first quarter of 2010 and unemployment reaches 12 percent, Cannon wrote today in a report. The San Francisco-based bank may need to raise $25 billion on top of the $25 billion it owes the U.S. Treasury for the industry bailout plan, he wrote.

First-quarter net income rose 50 percent to about $3 billion, Wells Fargo said last week in announcing preliminary results that topped the most optimistic Wall Street estimates and sparked a 32 percent jump in the stock. The bank attributed the profit to a surge in mortgage originations and revenue from Wachovia Corp., acquired in December. Full results are scheduled for April 22.

                            Continues...

I believe that comment is close to the sentiments of Andrew Jackson. Unfortunately, Obama is no Andrew Jackson when it comes to banking and constitutional issues related to money. Obama and Jackson both feared the banking industry but for different reasons. One wanted to kick the banks out of bed and did so while the other loves to snuggle with em and get paid for it.
