U.S. imposes duty on some softwood-lumber exports

    By Andrew Duffy, Ottawa Citizen
    April 7, 2009

OTTAWA — The United States will impose a 10 per cent customs duty on some of Canada's softwood-lumber imports, as the two countries renew their long and litigious dispute over forest products.

The action is renewing fears Washington is about to move aggressively to protect its resource sector during a recession that has already eliminated 5.1 million American jobs...

..."Washington is a pretty active place these days, and it's a situation where you have to tread very carefully with what you're doing under any trade agreement with the U.S.," he said...

Besides, who needs their crappy gooey Canadian oil sands anyway? We got Mexico and Venezuela to supply us for as far as the eye can see (through a coke bottle lens). We've got bombed out oil prices from a global recession (that will never end), so now we can give all our critical oil and gas suppliers the "screw you" we've been yearning to express, now that oil prices are weak. How sweet it is, in this hour of bombed out global energy prices, to show everyone who's who and what's what.

With America is taking her first bold steps towards energy independence we don't need any of them anymore.

        Lumber are really cheap.http://www.investmenttools.com/futures/clo/lumber.htm

I just don't know how to play it. In Canada you have http://www.acadiantimber.com/ and there are lot of stocks like these, however, they need to survive to. The US needs to print more money to avoid a crash in the dollar, as if the news just get worse and worse, it set's the stage for a possible run on the dollar, therefore printing a lot more money will actually help save the dollar, contradictory as it may sound.

          U.S. cranks up antidumping machine

Right on cue, U.S. steel producers have filed antidumping and anti-subsidy (countervailing duty) complaints against imports of high-quality steel pipe from China...

...In theory, antidumping and countervailing duty investigations are a quasi-judicial process governed by statue and the WTO agreements. In practice, the process is at least partly political.

USDOC is an agency of the executive branch. USITC is an independent regulatory agency, but the six commissioners (three from each party) are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate...

...Despite bold rhetoric from US and European leaders about the need to reaffirm commitment to the open trading system, antidumping and countervailing duty actions in sensitive sectors are gearing up, and G20 leaders are unlikely to risk unpopularity by blocking them...
