i love the music of thelonious monk, so when i saw him in the list of standard avatars offered by the bb, i put him up. that was before i knew you could do a custom avatar, but i liked the pic anyway, so kept it for years.

i then stumbled across the graffito re heisenberg, with the embedded joke about uncertainty [the principle for which heisenberg is famous- you can't tell precisely both where you are and where you're headed- the more you know one, the less you know the other, at least that's the case if you're an elementary particle]. and i thought that if there's one thing i believe in my bones, it's that you can't know, you can only guess and assign probabilities as best you can. so if finster's repeated message is relativity- paying attention to the variability of our measuring stick dollar, my repeated message is to embrace uncertainty and acknowledge a probabilistic view. [sorry- no jokes here.]

My pedantic bore comment for the week:

I wonder if this joke could be improved somehow. After all, according to Heisenberg, it should technically be possible to say with certainty whether he was someplace, if one accepted losing all information about his momentum. In a formal sense, the uncertainty principle may not be the best expression of the probabilistic nature of the universe that you're getting at.

I think that in the history of QM, the Copenhagen interpretation comes closest to the physical principle that you want to express, and the probabilistic nature of reality is specifically associated with the work of Max Born rather than Heisenberg.

"Born may or may not have been here."?

i didn't make it up. i found it. and it made me laugh. and if there's one thing i am, it's uncertain.
