Personal bankruptcies rise sharply in March

WASHINGTON -- Bankruptcy filings soared 9.2 percent for the first three months of 2009, as growing numbers of consumers and businesses sought debt protection amid massive job losses and tight credit markets.
Of more than 323,000 bankruptcy petitions filed in the first quarter, about 6 percent, or more than 20,000, were commercial or business filings, according to federal bankruptcy court statistics compiled by Automated Access to Court Electronic Records, an Oklahoma City bankruptcy management and data company.

Personal bankruptcies were filed at an average rate of 72 a day in nine counties of South Florida during March, the highest rate since 2005, according to preliminary court statistics.
For all of March, 2,247 personal bankruptcies were filed – 584 more than February’s total of 1,663.
This year’s March filings were up 57 percent over March 2008, when 1,426 personal filings were logged.
Federal bankruptcy codes were revised in 2005, prompting a rush of personal filings.
The sharp rise in personal bankruptcies overshadowed the business filings – 129 businesses declared bankruptcy in March, up from 105 in February and 82 last March.
The figures include nine counties that make up the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida.
