Czech PM attacks Obama spending

The Czech prime minister has condemned US President Barack Obama's economic recovery plans as "a way to hell".

Mirek Topolanek was speaking in the European Parliament, in his capacity as current holder of the EU presidency.

Hours before his remarks, President Obama appealed for all countries to bear the burden of spending to stimulate the world economy.

Mr Topolanek said the biggest success of last week's EU summit was its refusal to copy the US example.

His intervention comes 10 days before the G20 summit meeting in London and coincides with a visit to New York by UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who has called for a "worldwide fiscal and monetary stimulus".

Other European leaders, particularly French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, want tougher financial regulation to be the priority of the G20.

Mr Topolanek, whose government collapsed last night in a Czech parliament vote of no-confidence, said the United States was not taking "the right path".

Are they all envious that capital is going to flow from all those fragile countries to pay for the US debt/stimulus ? Otherwise a US stimulus - why should it bother them ? They are all in much more dire condition, their comments are not altruistic in any sense.

Yep, the American empire IS falling, not just those peoples that America has terroised like Iraq/Afgan/Vietham....South America.....Central America Etc (Most of the World)...but all those she has insulted (The Rest of the World).

The Czech Republic is, like the rest of Europe, being bitten by the global economic crisis - but that is not why its government was unseated in a confidence vote on Tuesday.

It may be tempting for foreign editors gazing at a map of Europe to add the Czechs to the short list of European governments (Iceland, Latvia and Hungary) that have fallen victim to the global slump.

But Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek's downfall had nothing to do with the recession. It wasn't the economy, stupid.

Rather it was the determination of a small group of defectors, two from Mr Topolanek's Civic Democrat party, two from the coalition Greens, to help the left-wing opposition bring him down.

They did so for ideological or personal reasons, or in some cases both. One Civic Democrat renegade said he had voted against the government because his party had supported the Lisbon Treaty. That should make the Eurocrats in Brussels very worried. more...
