    Re: Roubini 100% In Equities

Just watched Roubini on Real Time with Bill Maher and then went back to find this thread. He sure was right to be in stocks back in March '09, and I sure am kicking myself for staying short when the Dow was in the low 6000s!

Bill just asked him about gold and Roubini said, "Gold has no intrinsic value and if you're really worried about inflation rising I would buy Spam. You can eat Spam; you cannot eat gold."

You can buy Spam with gold (indirectly). You cannot buy ANYTHING with SPAM. What a ******* idiotic statement.

That's true for now in most places. If things go sufficiently sour, then food wins. I recommend having some long shelf life spare food on hand .. and lots of gold.
Most folks are good; a few aren't.

If it makes you feel any better, the Financial Times article referenced in the first post of this thread was published February 15, 2008. That means that Roubini has, in all likelihood, lost money.

            Re: Roubini 100% In Equities

The key point about Roubini's 'investing strategy', assuming the anecdote is real, is that it directly contradicts his own talk on where the economy is going etc etc.

Whether 2008, or 2009, or 2010 - Roubini as 'Dr. Doom' has been spouting the first part of the debt overhang.

How then is 100% investment in equities a good strategy?

Equally odd is how his pronouncements have marked aversions to common strategies for diversification away from sector risk: gold, foreign currencies.

Look at the overall pattern of his behavior, as well as his background, and for me it is clear what his role is.

He's said that he's always in equities. So he's way down like most the rest of the country.
